#29786 — Bootable Flash Drive for 10.7 problems

As per
http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Create-A-Bootable-Flash-Drive-With-Os-X-Lion-Installer.htm
I'm trying to create a bootable installer for 10.7 on a flash drive.
Staple's had a PNY 8gb Attache flash drive on sale and I picked up a
couple of them. Got as far as the restore instruction in DU but at the
end there's a Restore Failure Could not restore - Cannot allocate
memory error message .

The author of the how to article says (about the flash drive)

8 GB USB flash drive. You can use a larger drive if you wish, but more
important than the size of the flash drive is its speed. If you're
buying a new flash drive just for Lion, I recommend buying one of the
fastest available. While slow (read: inexpensive) flash drives will work
fine, you'll find that both the time it takes to create the bootable
flash copy of the OS X Lion installer, and the time it takes to install
Lion on a target drive, will be somewhat long.

I'm wondering if my problem means that the PNY is crap or if my problem
is elsewhere. I can't seem to find specs about the flash drive. I know
from when I was buying Micro SD chips they have a rating - class numbers
between 1 and 10 - indicating write speeds, but I can't seem to find
similar numbers for flash sticks.

"As of version 10.7.4 of the Lion installer, and continuing with the
Mountain Lion installer, you must use the mounted Mac OS X Install ESD
volume or you'll get an error at the end of the restore procedure, and
the newly created bootable drive may not function properly."

Were you able to reformat the USB thumb drive as GUID successfully?

Quite possible it's the thumb drive. I have had cheap thumb drives that
I can't use to boot with.

The problem was indeed during reformat in DU. I had noticed something
but didn't read it. When I went back and went through the partition
step again I saw the note

This partition will not be modified.
Size: 7.75 GB
Available space: 2.35 GB

Don't know why this is happening but I'm thinking I should probably just
return it. Unless someone has an idea of what's going on and how to
correct it. Thanks

Does your Mac have a DVD drive? If so, and you have a blank DVD lying
around; this worked for me and is cheaper than even the cheapest USB
thumb drive:

Thanks, I was going to give this a try but first wanted to get the flash
drive thing working. I think I heard that the DVD bootable installer is
a lot slower than a memory stick.

A friend of mine just booted his Mac with a 10.7 DVD yesterday and
complained it took 5:37 to get to the first screen. He was about to
force a restart thinking it had crashed.

5 minutes is not a lot of extra time to wait for a procedure that will
be done what - once or twice, if ever? Add in the 30 minutes of time you
will save by not having to go down to the store to buy a thumb drive
and you have a net time savings.

Further and more confusing developments. Returned the flash drives to
Staple's. Picked up a Sony Microvault (8 gb). Same problem. Tried it
out on my mbp 4,1 running 10.7.4. No problem. Back to the original
MacMini 3,1 running 10.6.8. Took it from the start. Same problem.
Tried it using DU on a partition of a drive attached to the MacMini
that's running 10.7.4. No problem. Booted back to the internal drive
on the MacMini, flash drive looks fine. Proceeded with the instructions
from the above mentioned create-a-bootable-flash-drive... site. Made a
copy of the .dmg file and put it on the desktop. Fired up DU. The
flash drive still looks fine but the InstallESD.dmg file isn't showing
up on the device list.

So now I've got two problems and one work around. I'd still like to
know why the MacMini running 10.6.8 has a problem partitioning the drive
though it doesn't seem to have a problem with it if it's been
partitioned on another system.
And what's going on with the .dmg file not showing up in DU.
I'm getting more and more confused and frustrated. Any suggestions?

I got the same error when I tried to create a bootable installer for
10.8 on an 8GB SanDisk Cruzer USB flash drive (using Disk Utility in
10.7.4 on a MacPro4,1). I finally gave up on DU and used Lion DiskMaker,
which worked perfectly.

Thanks for the link. If I get too frustrated maybe I'll give it a try.
