SubjectWorth getting a 13" MacBook Pro from an university?
Message-ID<-u-dnfS2Fo2OUIbNnZ2dnUVZ_qydnZ2d@earthlink.com>
Hello.

I recently got paper copies of an university (USC)'s advertisement/ad.
flyers (also on http://uscbookstore.com/site_computer_store.asp ) with
Apple products. I have a slowly dying (its AppleCare expired many months
ago) 15" MacBook Pro from late summer 2008 with its unsupported, updated
Mac OS X 10.5.8, and would like to replace it soon.

I was told that there were about fifteen/15 October 2011's model (2.4
GHz, Corei5DC/4GBDDR3/500 GB/Superdrive/iSight) left for $899. They were
brand new and not refurbished (never opened and used before).

Also, two faster and newer models:

13.3" LED/2.5GHz Dual Core i5 DC/2x2GB/500 GB/SD MD101LL/A Retail = $1,099

13.3" LED/2.9GHz Dual Core i7 DC/8 GB/750 GB/SD MD102LL/A Retail = $1,399

According to its computer store people, SD is solid-state disks. Does
Apple really have big sizes like that? I thought those SD sizes don't
exist for low costs. They look like my HD sizes to me?

I also read that they all come with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Currently,
Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) is the latest version and just came out.
I find this strange to see v10.5. What's up with that?

All of them come with an Apple $100 giftcard. Are these even worth
getting for their academic prices?

Thank you in advance. :)

Definitely not. That would be "SSD".

The "SD" in the above list refers to the built-in SD card reader (for
camera memory cards).

> Does Apple really have big sizes like that? I thought those SD sizes don't
> exist for low costs. They look like my HD sizes to me?

They are hard drive sizes.

The 13" MacBook Pro does have customization options to buy one with a
solid state drive instead of a hard drive, but it will add a minimum of
US$100 to the price (to replace the 750 GB hard drive in the high end
model with a 128 GB solid state drive; add another $100 for the low end
model). The highest capacity SSD Apple offers for those models is 512
GB, which would set you back an extra $900 or $1000 over the base price.

> I also read that they all come with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Whoever wrote that is very confused.

The above specifications are the latest (mid 2012) 13" MacBook Pros,
which will be supplied with Lion (specificallly 10.7.3 or later), or
possibly Mountain Lion if you wait long enough for new stock (if it does
come with Lion, you would be eligible for a free upgrade to Mountain
Lion).

They can't run Snow Leopard, let alone Leopard.

> Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) is the latest version and just came out.

Someone in the dealership needs to read their specification sheets again
and supply correct informatio to potential customers.

> All of them come with an Apple $100 giftcard. Are these even worth
> getting for their academic prices?

The academic prices you have quoted above are $100 less than the
standard retail prices, so with the gift card that gives you an
effective $200 discount off retail.

If you want to be able to run Snow Leopard (and older PowerPC
applications), there is no question - you cannot run Snow Leopard on a
mid 2012 MacBook Pro, but you can (with some preparation) on a late 2011
MacBook Pro.

Apart from that it is mainly a question of performance and price. The
mid 2012 model has the following advantages:

- Faster CPU
- Faster memory
- Better integrated graphics controller
- Bluetooth 4.0 rather than 2.1 + Extended Data Rate.
- USB 3.0 rather than USB 2.0.

Bluetooth 4.0 is a superset of 2.1+EDR. It will allow communication with
a wider range of Bluetooth devices, including new classes of low power
devices.

USB 3.0 is substantially faster than USB 2.0, as long as both the
computer and peripherals support USB 3.0. The theoretical improvement is
up to ten times faster, but for something like a new desktop hard drive
I'd expect to see more like two to three times improvement for large
file transfers.

Getting the high end mid 2012 model is really only worth it if you need
as much CPU speed as possible in the 13" form factor, or you want the
750 GB drive and don't have the option of customizing the entry level
model for some reason.

Ah. Someone, in
https://discussions.apple.com/message/19149066?ac_cid=op123456 , said it
is SuperDrive optical disc drive. Obviously, both of you agreed that it
is not SSD which makes sense now.

I thought so. Thank you for confirming! :)

Ouch!

Yeah, it made me confused too hence why I asked in here. ;)

Hmm, the university's bookstore is incompetent. [sighs]

So that would be October 2011 model that was mentioned then.

SD = SuperDrive is also possible. Several years ago it was an optional
component (selection between a "combo" drive and a "superdrive", the
latter being able to write DVDs and the former only read them), and
Apple might still be mentioning it as a feature in the model
specification string, especially given the lack of one in models like
the MacBook Air.

The card reader slot is actually SDXC (SD with extended capacity), which
supports MMC, SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards.

Yes. The official name of the model is "MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late
2011)". It was introduced in October 2011.

The Late 2011 series of MacBook Pros are just a minor component upgrade
of the Early 2011 series, which were released in February 2011. As far
as the operating system is concerned they are fundamentally the same.

The Early 2011 series originally came with Snow Leopard. If you bought
one in about August 2011 or later it came with Lion, but it was still
possible to install Snow Leopard with assistance from an older Mac that
could boot the Snow Leopard retail DVD, or by cloning a bootable Snow
Leopard system which had already been updated to 10.6.8, or by getting
hold of the model-specific Snow Leopard DVD which originally shipped
with that model.

Since the OS thinks the Late 2011 series is effectively the same model,
it also works with Snow Leopard using the same methods.

(The same goes for the Mid 2011 iMac, which originally came with Snow
Leopard, but not the Mid 2011 MacBook Air, which came with Lion and had
architectural changes which weren't supported by Snow Leopard. The mid
2011 Mac Mini also came with Lion, but was similar enough to the
previous model that some variants can be made to run Snow Leopard, with
some issues.)

Hmm. Based on
http://store.apple.com/us_edu_106346/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro/select
... both are there. I assume 2.4 Ghz has them too. I also noticed
SuperDrive is on the side instead of the front like the old 15" MBP from
2008.

Hmm, weird for USC to have Snow Leopard (v10.5).

Yeah, I think my new Mac Mini is the 2011 model and it came with 10.7.x
(definitely not the latest v10.7.4).

Sorry, I meant "it is possible that the notation SD in the list of
features might be referring to the SuperDrive". Every 13" MacBook Pro to
date has a SuperDrive (and an SD slot or later variant like SDXC).

Apple doesn't generally publish those strings outside of retailer
product lists, on the boxes and on invoices, and doesn't explain them,
so we can only deduce what they mean by educated guesswork. The
corresponding string from a 13" MacBook Air or 15" Retina MacBook Pro
would be conclusive: if it doesn't have "/SD" in the list of features
then that must be referring to the optical drive rather than the SD card
slot.

They claimed it had Leopard (10.5.x), but someone probably just got the
names mixed up. Both Late 2011 and Mid 2012 models will come with Lion
(10.7.x).

OK, good. I did e-mail them and did get a reply/response that I could do
that free upgrade (assuming 10.8) after purchase. I'd rather have it
preinstalled! Bah.

USC's computer store replied to my e-mail. It is SuperDrive SD and
Mac OS X 10.5 error (should be Leopard/10.6).

They are still wrong. The new machines ship with 10.7.4 and *will not
run* 10.6. If I were you, I'd avoid these bozos.

Definitely. UCLA's books store may do better.

Yes they would, the education discount applies to all students. In fact,
you can get it yourself in most cases. My wife bought an education
discount computer via store.apple.com when she was getting her masters.

no they won't.

if you're not a ucla student or somehow affiliated with ucla, you won't
be getting a discount from the ucla bookstore.

from apple it does, not from a particular school's bookstore.

The ones you linked were this years. The ones from October 2011 will also come with 10.7, though it is *possible* they could run 10.6. Apple does not ship machines with old OS versions, and Lion came out in July 2011.

But they will still come with 10.7 installed. Yu would have to find 10.6
somehow, and it's not longer offered for sale.

I am OK with 10.7 or even 10.8 as long as they don't come with older
versions. I consider 10.6 somewhat old since that is the next one to be
unsupported until 10.9. :(
