Correct. I don't think he understands the fact that Thunderbolt does not imply PCI-E. There are PCI-E to Thunderbolt cards already available, but there has never been a Thunderbolt to PCI-E device. Nor is PCI-E needed on any Mac other than the Mac Pro. That's why it's going to be interesting to see what they do in regards to a new Mac Pro, if they do an ARM version at all. There will be a need for additional chips to be designed and fabricated, and this is for a low-volume product. It's sad to see the lack of understanding of how involved and costly it is to design and fabricate new devices. You simply don't do it for low-volume chips (except for military devices, where money is no object, and where the Fabs are in the U.S. and no one talks about them). It's not surprising to see that people don't know how things work in the semiconductor business. I recall when a computer manufacturing company would come in to talk to us about some custom parts that they wanted. We'd say "but we already have an ASIC that performs the function that you need and it is in high=volume manufacturing and very inexpensive." But they'd want some small extra feature to distinguish their system from the competition so we'd do a custom ASIC just for them if they paid NRE plus a much higher per-unit cost. Sometimes we could add a feature to an existing design, if it didn't add any Fab costs, but then everyone would get that feature unless we could find a way to do a metal mask change to disable the feature in some parts. Thankfully, Jobs finally realized that there was no upside in having a much higher BOM due to custom silicon and moved the Mac to the x86 platform where commodity devices could be used. Buying PA Semi and getting into the chip design business themselves was a smart move, but back in the early days of Apple they didn't have the volumes necessary for this, nor were there contract Fabs available.

But, all you are doing is speculating about products that haven't been introduced. What says multiple lanes of PCIe can't be connected to an ARM processor/processors? What says Apple does not have a solution for multiple GPU cards? What says 40Gb/sec is or isn't sufficient bandwidth between a processor and display card? (Given the display card has lots of video RAM and processing on board.) Sure, you don't know what Apple is going to produce. Almost nobody outside Apple really does. Saying something can't be done because of XYZ is assuming some sort of implementation without really knowing what Apple may be doing. Apple may be well along in an implementation that meets the requirements of what they plan to produce. All this speculation/FUD is merely a waste of time.

You are the one speculating it is too expensive for Apple to develop a PCIe solution for the ARM products. Using Google, you could learn that ARM created documentation to add PCIe to an ARM design over two years ago. You could also learn that others have produced products the RM processors and PCIe. You have no understanding of Apple's development process or the available IP for adding PCIe to ARM. Yet you provide your FUD questioning how smart some action is. Given the long lead time to bring major new silicon to market, Apple may have already completed most of the needed design work. You don't know what is going on inside Apple so all you can do is spread FUD.
