This is where the distinction between Apple designing 100% or Apple allowed to design from scratch is important because Apple is surely reusing a lot of the ARM core logic provided by ARM Inc. (and I suspect the ARM memory controller perhaps unchanged since Apple doesn't seem to brag about it). The Alpha team was disbanded in stages. Under Palmer, he donated to Intel much of the Alpha IP that Intel had stolen for the Pentium III (Digital won the court and in punishment, Intel wasa forced to accept the IP for free in exchnage for buying the Digital Hudson FAB and some of the engineering. Then Under Compaq, Capellas went further is slowing down Alpha, letting some engineers go and announced the end of Alpha in June 2001. Two more iterations were in the works the EV7 and EV7+ so some of the engineering stayed on. HP slowed down the work because EV7 provided HUGE performance and techno0logy advantages that wopuld make Merced look like a 1950s vacuum tube computer. But as soon as EV7 was done, the engineering team was donated to Intel (nt all went). The end result: over the years, Alpha engineers ended up at ARM, AMD, Intel aor started on their own. If the ARN memory controlled is best in class, the Apple engineers would recognize this and see no advantage in rewriting it from scratch to have no performance advantage. Intel's CSI/Quickpath was derived from Alpha IP and enginers. AMD's multicore memory controller in mid 2000s (along with 64 bit extensions) also was helped by Alpha engineers who moved to AMD. The AMD memory controloler was actually closer to Alpha's than Intel's CSI/Quickpath because it had coherent cashe between cores. IBM is one who developped their own for Power and also had coherent cache. (so when one core changes a value in RAM that is in its cache, the other cores automatically see that change, so the changed value need not be distributed to the other caches or process to invalidate the values in other casches to force the cache to fetch from RAM again)

I don't think anyone is disputing that, if Apple changes even a single line of code in the compiler, or they tweak a setting in the synthesizer, if they modify a single resistor value, or a single capacitor value, or a single diode value, or a transistor width and length, etc., that Apple is _designing_ its own chips. For sure, Apple is designing these chips just as anyone else using the same licensed technology is designing their chips. And, of course, Apple MARKETING is correct on "branding" their chips just as Chevron branded "Techron", so that foolish people will fall for the BS. My point is that Apple is frantically desperate to not have you figure out what these new Mac ARM PC will be powered by, which is ARM technology. This needs a redesign wheneber you do a process schink and Apple has been ahead of the industry in using the latest/small process shrinks. Obviously, everything outside of the core is Apple designed. Where I debate is that you and your ilk's assumption that Apple reverse engineered the ARM architecture from the ground up, not re-using any ARM logic and only implementing the instruction tests enought to pass the tests. My argument is that there is a mixture, a grey area at logic levels above silicon where Apple likely use granfathered designs from an ARM provided design while changing others. The reverse also applies; you have no proof that an Axx chip contains 0% of IP that came from ARM core designs or other subsystems such as memory controllers, branch prediction logic etc. And you can't have proof because Apple never released such info. Apple is smart enough to not spend money and time re-inventing the wheel for portion of the chips that came from ARM and wouldn't get any significant advantage from their tweeking.

And Jony Ive ensures the chips are very thin and elegant with nice curves and flashy connectors at the base of chip, and that the stuff printed on the top of the chip (logo, model number, version etc) uses proportional fonts and pastel colours that fully embody Ive's style guide. Ive's attention to detail also ensure the chip itself (under the plastic) is very cosmetically pleasing to the eye when viewed under a microscope even if nobody can see it :-) :-) :-)
