Those have been around for YEARS and YEARS. We had a front door into a
small porch area and another door into our house when I was under five
years old, *cough* *cough* decades ago, and they weren't even remotely
a new idea then. They were very popular for a long time, but do seem to
have almost faded out. They were great because they allowed you to go
into your house and close the door against the winter weather, then
remove wet shoes and raincoats in the tiled porch area before entering
the house's proper living spaces - it stops the entryway carpets from
becoming dirty.

For small parcels you can get a delivery chute similar to those used in
some banks or library after-hours book returns, where the slot has a
double-door system where you put the parcel between the doors and when
you close it up the parcel slides off into an inside collection box.
The double door means even when opened you can't access any further
than the slot itself.

You can also now get "smart" doorbells which contain cameras that send
the video to your smartphone, so you can remotely unlock the door to
let people in when you're not home and lock it again after they leave.
You could add some internal webcams so you can keep an eye on them
while they are inside the house. Even better, you can couple that with
a double-door porch and you're good to go.

But even the that wouldn't stop either a crooked delivery person
stealing parcels (either the one they are delivering or another already
in the porch area) nor a normal break-n-enter thief.

There are also companies that run a storage-type option whereby you can
have your parcels delivered to what looks like a regular street
address, but works more like a post office box. The staff there accept
delivery and put the items into your own secure box. You simply go and
collect the deliveries from your own box when it suits you. Again, the
people working there have to be trustworthy. New Zealand Post runs a
similar system with companies in various countries whereby we can buy
an item that is only deliverable in America, UK, or wherever, which is
delivered to teh storage warehosue, and then forwarded by them to the
New Zealand delivery address.

Amazon lockers work very well for me. There's one a couple miles away at
a Whole Foods that I got to regularly and drive past nearly every time I
leave the house.

There are two others within 3 miles of my house which I sometimes use
then the nearest on is "full"

I wouldn't dream of using anything less than 256GB for a startup drive,
but to each, his own. : )

Really? When I did that on my iMac the external disk didn't load fast
enough at boot and the system would create a new home folder for me
since my home folder wasn't available.

I still have that issue, as my Dropbox is on the external disk and many
of my "dot" files live in Dropbox, so generally I have to quit Terminal
on restart/login and then relaunch it so that it processes the .bashrc
and such.

Not sure what to make of that. Our systems may be set up a little
differently. I have a firmware password set as well as FileVault set so
that only an administrator account can unlock the system volume, which
means when I initially boot the machine, I get logged into the admin
account first, which gives the system time to mount and unlock the
external drive before I log out of the admin account and into my
standard account. I also have created a symbolic link at /Users/myname
pointing to /Volumes/Data/Users/myname for convenience on the command
line.

I have noticed that if I start a system update/upgrade from my standard
account, and the machine reboots during installation, it tried and fails
to log into my standard account, and I end up at the login screen
instead, where I will log in as admin, log out, then log into my
standard account. But when that happens, no new home folder is created
in /Users, and my symbolic link is still there.

That would do it.

When I get my new machine I will probably do this, even though the
double login dance is a little annoying, I do not reboot often.

Right: rebooting is indeed a rarity. FileVault's boot sequence is
slightly annoying, but I've been doing it for so long now it doesn't
really bother me much. I'm used to entering the admin password at boot,
and I have an automatic logout script that puts me into the login screen
if no action is taken within 5 seconds after that initial admin login.
It takes just a few seconds to get logged into my standard account after
a reboot. I just prefer limiting the number of users that can unlock my
encrypted drives to one account with a really strong passcode, to reduce
the potential attack surface if someone should get physical access to a
drive.

The firmware password is to protect against this type of thing:

And Find My Mac lets me track, disable, or erase my Macs remotely should
they become "lost".

The combination of all three makes my machines virtually useless to the
common thief.
