#117014 — Lost linkage to volume control keys

Running the latest Mac OS on a MacBook Pro. After several ordeals, including
disk replacement and lots of file recoveries, the sound control keys on the
keyboard (louder/softer/off) no longer work. Other methods work fine, so it
isn't a sound problem, just a S/W linkage issue.

No Apple hints on function keys seem to address those settings. Restore
Defaults, for example hasn't worked. Suggestions/instructions?

system preferences, keyboard pref panel, keyboard tab -
is use f1, f2, etc. keys as standard function keys checked or not?

Yes it is checked. That was one of my early hopes. Anything else to check/try?

uncheck it.

with it checked, they're f1, f2.., not the device specific brightness,
sound, etc.

That option isn't in my Keyboard preferences (it's third-party Windoze
keyboard), but you probably want it NOT checked. The "standard function
keys" would mean the normal F1, F2, etc. functions rather than the
system control functions.

Unchecking it was the solution. The verbiage in the Keyboard preferences
seemed to indicate the opposite, but let's not argue with success. Thanks
to the group for the help.

It says "When this option is selected, press the Fn key to use the
special features printed on each key". So if you want the F10-F12 to
control volume you have to press Fn while pressing them. Fn is like a
shift key that only affects the behavior of the F# keys.

and a few others, such as the arrow keys and delete key.
