#116843 — Safari url autocomplete

FromJ Burns <burns@nospam.com>

SubjectSafari url autocomplete

As far back as I remember, Safari's autocomplete has sometimes hijacked
me. I'd start typing a site I frequent, and it would take me somewhere
I'd never been.

I often go to accuweather to check local weather. Today Safari took me
instead to the accuweather mobile site, which I never use, for the
weather at a location hundreds of miles from here.

I typed it again, making sure I had it right. Again, Safari took me to
the mobile site for the distant location. I used Google to get to
accuweather. When I clicked the link, Safari again hijacked me to the
place I didn't want to go.

Under the Develop Menu, I clicked Clear Caches. It didn't help. I quit
all apps and used Onyx to clear internet files. That worked, but it
seems like overkill.

When Safari hijacks me, what's the best remedy?

I should have said Onyx cleaned, nor cleared, internet files. For
example, it didn't clear my History.

you had been to that site at some point in the past, and now that
you've been there twice in the past day or so, it's going to autofill
that over anything else that matches. you'll need to choose the site
you do want to go to for a few times to make it a higher priority.

The "best remedy" is to simply bookmark the website you want in the
Favourites folder, then you don't have to even type anything, just
click the button in the Favourites Bar.

The next best rememdy would be to pay attention to what you're doing -
Safari gives you a list of possibilities and it's up to you to choose
the correct one.

Safari's suggestions aren't based solely on where you have been before.
It also uses Google and Siri to find what you might be looking for.

I haven't tested it, but you can possibly turn off Siri's suggestions in
System Preferences > Siri > Siri Suggestions & Privacy
and possibly turn off Google's suggestions in various options in
   Safari > Prefences > Search

Steve Carroll's posts are altogether entirely deceitful. There can be no doubt that as soon as any released 'plonked person' does whatever to confuse the little daisy's feelings that they will be blocked again.

Asking Steve Carroll to atone, which I have done, is different than showing his hypocrisy. My idea was that good people show up here in order to catch bullies. It isn't as if most do not quickly figure out what this group is, chrisv included. All that Steve Carroll cares about is that Steve Carroll gets to express his prank call and then hang up and giggle about it. The fact that chrisv is an involuntary target on the other end of the phone is his motivation. What I do is certainly technically correct. I think we have different views entirely.

You need to watch carefully what happens.

If you type URL in, and it remains what you type it until just after you
press retun, then it is likely that it is the remote web site which
decided to redirect you to a different URL.

If you use curl -I <url> at line command, you may see the response is a
300 "redirect" class of message with a new URL that is suggested (mobile
site on a dofferent city likely based on geolocation based on your IP
address (which is an art, not a science).

> Under the Develop Menu, I clicked Clear Caches.

In the Develop Menu look at User agent. Make sure it doesn'Lt pretend to
be an IOS device.

The first time I typed it and got the strange page, I thought a typo or
an addition in the URL might have slipped by me. The second time, I made
sure it was correct before I hit enter.

I then started typing wunderground. Safari autocompleted for local
radar. Wunderground came back saying, "Oops, that page doesn't exist."
The URL looked correct. I tried it again with the same result.

I googled for accuweather, clicked the link, and got the same strange
accuweather page.

Because I couldn't reach familiar pages at two different companies, I
assumed Safari was at fault. Your explanation sounds right. While Onyx
was cleaning internet files, accuweather got straightened out.

I still got a "page doesn't exist" from wunderground, but it was okay
the next time I tried. It looks as if both companies happened to have
server problems at the same time, and that fooled me. Thanks.

I don't think wunderground exists anymore, at least as of May 23rd.

They were bought out or taken over by the weather channel a couple years ago
and seem to have decided running two weather services is not in their best
interest.

The wunder apps for ios are mostly dead since last week so it doesn't surprise
me the web sites are dying off too.

It's a shame really, WU seemed like it was the only one that had/showed data
from local weather stations.

I still get it at wunderground.com. Downdetector shows that a lot of
people reported problems between about 1630 and 1830 EDT, May 31.

Slow down and observe what is actually happening. When you type a URL in
to the location bar at the top of a browser window, the browser will
often autocomplete the URL with the site you visit most frequently that
roughly matches the portion of the URL you typed. It will also show a
list just below that of places you have previously visited that roughly
match the URL you typed. If you are observant, you will notice that one
of the items in that list (the top one) is highlighted. If you press
Return on the keyboard while one of those items is highlighted, you are
telling the browser to go there. I suspect that's what is happening in
your case. If not, record a video of it and post it here so we can see
an actual example of the behavior you are seeing.

I have had a similar issue.

That's what I would expect.

And I would expect that too.

But it's defintely not what happened with me. I think there must also be
autocompletion to a site that was visited most recently, and persistence
of this even when one chooses another site.

Specifically, I visit guardian.co.uk once or twice a day, and for a long
time that's what autocompleted when I typed "gu". Then for a while gu
automcopleted to gutenberg or gutenprint (just one of the two, forget
whih) - I don't recall visiting that, but I expect I did. Then it
changed to gumtree after I had visited that once or twice, and this
persisted for a while. Then gu kept autocompleting to guardianbookshop,
after I had visited that once, and that seems to be what's happening at
the moment. All these three did not, to my memory, give a secondary
choice below the main one.

But "gua" currently gives guardianbookshop as the first choice, with
guardian.co.uk below it.

Each morning I'd type the Donald's surname for news on the president,
and Safari wanted to take me to the Truman Library. I think it went on
for months. I don't remember ever having been there.

I'm familiar with watching out for autocomplete, but it seems my recent
problem arose when two hosts that had trouble at the same time.

Snit Glasser asked to be rated according to direct statistical evidence, which The Holy Ghost obliged him with. The Holy Ghost deceived Snit Glasser a bit, big deal. Snit Glasser is being a wailing schmuck about it? All that matters is that Snit Glasser gets to broadcast his poorly written flyer and then hang up and giggle about it. The fact that The Holy Ghost is a real person on the other end of the phone is the game. You ran it and read multiple reviews and your "extensive experience" lead you to that conclusion, so what? Can you get a little less dense? Thanks to Snit Glasser and his 'co-trolls' you now need an IP filtering system (which I configured for Elementary OS and Google Groups). If people start targeting him again I will not be able to stop myself... as I've always stated I would. I'm referring to real posters here, not Snit Glasser's friends, who are mostly him talking to himself.

Another successful "thumb drive install" test. That is if you count utter failure as a success.

He is incontrovertibly dishonest, he got caught and he's doing the normal ego protecting BS covered in http://stanford.io/2lh3f5e as he endeavors to be given a smattering of honor... but it backfired. I bet he thinks my life was worse than Steven Petruzzellis's. These degenerates get their enjoyment out of drawing out angry reactions to their crap, which is the very definition of a troll.

Was that meant to be to Steven Petruzzellis? No one here has ever read my code, much less found a bug; still, in the dark recesses of my brain, I'm thinking, "I have dark thoughts in the middle of the night".
