So this is likely a job created to keep someone on payroll until he/she finds something else. However, considering Apple is in IT, and IT is by default populated by white male geeks, there is a need to actively encourage other type of humans to choose to go into the IT carreer. Having monolithic employee force also means you have a monolithic set of ideas on how to design products (or what products to develop). Having more diversity gets you different ideas.
