And this is the line that decent newsreaders use to thread articles. This
line contains the unique article number of every article posted in this
thread. Crap newsreaders use the Subject: line.

I hate threading, I want "by order received" so I can clearly > see the new articles at bottom of list. It's usually easier to have them reverse sorted if using date order. That way the new ones are at the top and you don't have to keep scrolling through all the old messages. My newsreader is set to sort by Subject and then within that messages are threaded. It makes it easier to follow a series of replies. All the articles are always "new" since I either read or mark them all as read as I go through the various subscribed newsgroups, and read articles are not displayed again (they can be retrieved if I really need an older one). Headers are hidden - there's no need to see all that garbage on every message. If needed, I can just choose Show Headers from the menubar

Which is wrong, since Usenet does not guarantee delivery in the order
sent.

You should have seen it, it went past the keeper like a bullet into the left top of the net. I cried my eyes out when the referee refused my request to have the ball stay tied up in the net at the point it hit as a sort of shrine of my deed to live on in posterity. "Why can't you just use another ball for the rest of the game, goddammit?" Fell on deaf ears! Probably some of you yanks don't understand. Riiiiiiight. No one who buys anything other than Linux can possibly be doing it for rational reasons. LOL > > If you're talking about someone smart enough to make it all the way > to usenet and actually know what Linux is at all, enough to ask which > distribution might be best for them, then I don't agree. Hmmm... I'm here on Usenet... ...I'm know what Linux is, and I've even used it (albeit fairly briefly)... ...and I'm telling you that on good and rational grounds, Linux just isn't that useful for most people. Just like most people no longer want a car that requires them to mess around with a distributor and a carburetor (and they also don't want one with an "open source" third-party replacement engine management system), most computer users don't want to have to deal with the: "just download a package manager and install what you want" mentality that Linux mostly offers. It's about true utility: having a device that does what you want without undue fuss. People claim that Macs are expensive, but they offer that kind of utility, and I have seen that once someone has actually experienced what that is like, they don't go back to Windows even; much less Linux. Case in point: I have got a serious techno-savvy friend who is also in the music business. He works in computer programming and was completely "happy" with Linux for his home systems; even had the Linux music-making software. But he didn't USE the Linux machine for recording and editing music, he had a Windows box for that. Why? Because the Linux box was too fiddly and got in the way of the actual goal: recording tracks and editing them together into music. But even the Windows box had issues with doing his audio work. Latency and glitches that he could never resolve to his satisfaction, so at some point, he tried someone else's Mac OS X machine for music creation. Now his regular machine is a Mac and it does all his tasks. He doesn't like the walled garden approach, but he tolerates it (and the higher price of the system)... ...BECAUSE IT DOES THE JOB WELL AND WITH A MINIMUM OF FOOLING AROUND.

Apple makes good, good money on Mac sales too, Marek. In North America, more than 10% of the personal computers sold are Macs, and bear in mind that the Macs are almost all really USED as personal computers, whereas some significant fraction of "Windows PCs" are actually used as servers, dedicated industrial machines, etc. So the actual percentage of computers bought for personal use that are Macs is higher than that 10% > > // snip > >>> Could have fooled me. Can you not comprehend that maybe... ...just maybe... ...people buy and use Apple products because they work well for them? That perhaps--even if they were "taken in by the marketing"——they change their minds if the products didn't work well? Apple's customers are very loyal, Marek. Can you see how that conflicts with your claim? I've sold hundreds of Macs and work on hundreds and hundreds more for clients for the last nearly 25 years. I've had lots and lots of people come up and thank me out loud for putting them onto the Mac. I've had ONE (yes: literally one person) who, after trying the Mac, didn't want to stick with it.

I already know what Linux can do and so does every other Linux user who is reading this. If I am so wrong, surely one would step forward and say so. If you actually used Linux like you claim to have then you'd too know I am dead right. The fact that you don't believe me simply proves you don't know any Linux at all. // snip > You're claiming that fully 3 in 10 out of all the computer users in > North America are "mindless". Oh no I don't claim that at all. It's higher than that. ;) -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

Microsoft owns that market and it doesn't matter how good other OSes are or how much they cost. Microsoft gets in at the start and locks up the OEMs, so the choice of OS is never even given to the consumer. It's not a level playing field. In fact, I think it's pretty impressive that Apple and Mac OS and then Mac OS X have been able to maintain a small position in the desktop and laptop markets - even though they've always cost more than Windows systems. Apple's advertising has been good at times. I know I really enjoyed the "I'm a Mac" commercials. They also have a really loyal customer base, and I think a lot of that is because many Mac users really love the Mac. (I don't think that most Windows users love Windows.) A lot of Linux users (and other non-Windows OS users) really love their OS. So we have some common ground with Mac users. We're also alike in that we're not using the default Billybox that so many people buy at the appliance store, from the Home Shopping Network, or some other mass-market retailer that sells computers the same way they sell microwave ovens. Microsoft is the one that pushed for Secure Boot. Microsoft is the enemy. Apple paid for the development of MkLinux. Draw whatever conclusions you will from this.

To be fair, it was leveled considerably by the US vs Microsoft, but the market position given to Microsoft by their anti-competitive actions (leveraging off of their position as the only alternative OS for the standard established by IBM's entry into the personal computer market) isn't one they're just going to lose overnight. :-) > > In fact, I think it's pretty impressive that Apple and Mac OS and then > Mac OS X have been able to maintain a small position in the desktop and > laptop markets - even though they've always cost more than Windows > systems. Yup. Small... ...but growing. It's interesting to examine just how much larger the Mac's share of personal computer use is where people are relatively more affluent. Statcounter puts the Mac's web usage at nearly 1/5 of browsing in North America for instance. > > Apple's advertising has been good at times. I know I really enjoyed the > "I'm a Mac" commercials. I've done a couple of stints as a Mac salesperson and in one case, we were also selling IBM PS/2 systems. Customers to whom I sold Macs would occasionally come back into the store... ...to thank me for setting them free from Windows. :-) > > A lot of Linux users (and other non-Windows OS users) really love their > OS. Yup. But I do think that Linux users, in their personal enthusiasm for the product, imagine that it is as ready-for-the-average-person as the Mac (or yes: Windows) is, and that's simply not the case. My aunt is my measuring stick for things like this. She's in her 80s, but still very much "all there" and she came to computers in her 70s. She first ignored my advice because her WWII-English frugality saw that she could buy a complete system for so little (she was a little thoughtful when she realized that the nice couple she knew who were selling her their complete Windows PC setup were buying an iMac to replace it), but I helped her get up and running on Windows. Then Windows 8 came out, and it was simply too much for her to handle the (stupid) UI changes. So she finally got a Mac, and she loves it. And after a very short while, she's become completely comfortable in her (admittedly somewhat limited) use of it. I just don't think things would have gone NEARLY as smoothly if she'd decided to install Linux on something. YMMV of course. > > Microsoft is the one that pushed for Secure Boot. Baker is generally not worth "debating", IMHO. -- Real computer scientists despise the idea of actual hardware. Hardware has limitations, software doesn't. It's a real shame that Turing machines are so poor at I/O.
