As certain video programming does not support .MKV file types, one needs to convert files to a supported format. While Handbrake does the job, it only does it by re-encoding the video. (there is a pass through option for audio, but not for video). I did a cursory look for a utility that can just unpack a MKV and repack the same content into a different container type such as .MOV .AVI or whatever. I looked into MKVtools, but like handbrake, it appears to rebuild the contents instead of just changing container (and the test version is useless since it embeds its watermark which means it re-encodes the video and modifies it). Any hints on a simple utility that can just change the container file format (or even split the MKV contents into video, audio, subtitles etc) files ?

I was thinking ffmpeg (some version) shipped with OS X. I remember now that it's one of the things I instantly build on any new Mac system (along with ncftp and an updated rsync). There was once a GUI version: http://www.ffmpegx.com/ but I've never used it and it doesn't look like it's being maintained. And ffmpeg is an incredibly deep application; I'm not sure how one could built all it's complex invocations into a "click-here" app. You can find the man page online. Also -- not sure about subtitles (which you mentioned at one point) in avi. You'd probably have to ship a separate file. But but -- -an would disable the audio, no? What audio did your avi contain? -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. They have put back more tits into the Zhora dressing room scene. -- notes for Blade Runner

The intent was to merge the stereo audio from DVD, into the 1080p version whose sound was the original mono. So there was no point in having the mono audio into the "temporary" file that I would import into Premiere where I woudl merge in the stereo audio. Along with colour correction/white balance, it takes about 20 hours to re-encode that movie.

Damned .... after 14 hours of processing, the movie with a silent sound track. It's there in the specs, but it doesn't generate ANY sound (the stereo doesn't indicate arrival of a signal). But the image is fine, much improved over original so that isn't lost. I found out CS6 has "audition". It has a "convert to 5.1" "Favourite. So now, I have to watch plenty of view and do googling to learn what if can do and if it is of any of use :-)

The Little App Factory have written a few good tools.
RipIt is a DVD ripper, and Evom is a media converter.
I haven't tried any of their others, but these two
work quite well.
