the original mouse suffered a battery leak and was replaced by a
wireless mouse with 2 buttons and a wheel

the wheel can also be clicked left/right but how to make that work on
the mac is a mystery

i wonder is it possible and how

the original mouse still works but the shiny battery compartment
looks dull on one side after cleaning

What mouse is it?

Does the company make Mac drivers for it?

Failing that, try this:

I have three Logitech mice with sideways scrolling (by pushing the
scroll wheel left or right), all of which scroll sideways just fine on
every version of OS X on which I've used them (10.5 and later), without
installing any drivers. Built-in support by Mac OS X is sufficient.

One of my mice is Bluetooth (V470), the other two are Logitech 2.4 GHz
wireless with a USB dongle (V450).

I've never installed any drivers supplied by Logitech.

Yes it is. As long as the mouse is following USB/Bluetooth standards, no
drivers or special settings are required.

there is some kind of software for the mouse under system prefs

maybe that needs to be removed for maxocs to handle left/right wheel
clicks

will try that next

There is a standard Mouse system preference pane which is part of OS X.
I haven't done anything to fiddle with that either - my mouse software
is absolutely standard as supplied with OS X, and horizontal scrolling
works.

If I have one of my Logitech mice connected, the Mouse preference pane
shows basic settings: tracking speed, scrolling speed, double-click
speed and primary mouse button selector (left or right button).

I'm wondering if your apparent lack of horizontal scrolling is simply
because the windows you are trying to use it in don't have any
horizontal scroll bars. Many applications adjust their content to fit
the width of the window rather than letting you scroll horizontally.

Finder windows are an easy test case: put the window in list view and
reduce its width enough so that the columns are wider than the window
width, and you should have a horizontal scroll bar, which can be used to
test the sideways scrolling of the mouse.

Maybe the mouse is simply broken or needs a good cleaning.

I've come to the party late but have/use/love only a 15-year old
7-button button Logitech mouse (MX600). It's my third. When I spill
beer or coke into one I have to go find another used or via EBay or
something. I can't imagine using another. Same with the keyboard and
old S530. That's just me: I'm a big fan. I program the additional
buttons on both to do specific things that make using Logic easier and
less click/arm intensive.

If it's a LogiTech it will likely say so on top along with their icon
which looks kinda like a left parentheses "(", with a circle with three
dashes on the right, kinda like a child's drawing of a sun.

They likely make mice without that logo/name on the front, but it will
say LogiTech on the bottom, with the same logo.

Take a look and verify that it is indeed a LogiTech mouse or else all
the rest of this is aimless prattle.

Even better take a look at this layout and tell us WHICH LogiTech mouse it is:

Such hootypats are the regular way LogiTech works, so that's hopeful.

I've long since forgotten about the driver, but among your system
preferences, at the bottom, should be one named "LogiTech Control
Center". If you don't have that, and again assuming yours is a
Logitech Mouse, I suggest you download and install it:

By using this you can program every button or wheel to do whatever you
like. The general display (using the MX600):

small to me for a mouse

may need a reinstall

just want horiz scroll
now maybe the expectation is wrong so i may need to retest

does the wheel have to be clicked and turned
i would expect that it would move just by click left/right
maybe move 1/4 total distance to be scrolled per click
but this might go against the maccosx grain of fewer knobs to turn

No. On all three of my Logitech mice, pushing sideways on the wheel
(with no downward pressure) is sufficient to invoke sideways scrolling.
It is an on/off switch - the scrolling continues as long as the wheel is
held in that position (and there is more content to scroll into view).

it is an m325 and i have given up on it
not a big huge loss
it is annoying that a simple hardware feature's unavailable

i'm not interested in the depths or bowels of macosx

the mouse works well otherwise and is a good mouse

According to others the feature is available. There's apparently either
something wrong with that mouse - broken wheel buttons, doesn't use
correct USB signals, etc. or you may simply need one of the extra
third-party mouse Preference Panels.

I have a Logitech mouse with features like that. It came with a CD with
drivers, and you can also download it from their web site. It adds a
System Preference that allows customizing the behavior of the buttons,
wheel, etc.

Because there is no Apple mouse with a left-right wheel click. Such a
mouse would either come with Mac drivers from the manufacturer (or
their website) with such options, or may possibly be set using one of
the two add-ons suggested by others.

Perhaps BetterTouchTool could handle it.

It's a third-party add-on which gives extra controls for both Apple and
third-party input devices. The software (which I can't recall the name
of at the moment) suggested by someone else is also a third-party
add-on giving extra controls.
