I stand corrected.
The fact I had initially save the original file in RTF (having seen no
plain text option at the time) and having a notion of what "formatting"
means as opposed to "saving", I was misled by the two-menu sequence.
I now realize the two-menu sequence is as follows...
To save *to* plain text:
1. Format > Make Plain Text, File > Save
To save *as* other formats:
2. File > Save > File Format > {other formats}

It must be really tough for you when you have to go through all this
just to know that saving is necessary to retain changes.

On my TextEdit on SL, you can go to the Format menu and choose Plain Text, if it is defaulted to Rich Text, or choose Rich Text if it is defaulted to Plain. If you know the default, you can change it for the doc you are working on via the Format menu or simply Shift Command T. -- dorayme

I agree with you.

Ok, now I'm worried I've given you bad advice, if you actually agree with me. Nothing you ever agree with is rational... -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

If he or she knows what is default, the same key combo will work to change it from the one to the other but that does not immediately *tell* the user what they are really doing in the way that an inspection of the menu does. -- dorayme

All we were trying to do was save some text into a portable ASCII text file which was going to be put on a flash disk for use off the Macintosh. In most operating systems, there are multiple ways of doing that, but on the Macintosh, the method of creating an empty file isn't one of them. For our purpose today, that's fine, but, I can see instances where placeholder empty files might be useful - but that's not my beef at this point in time (as I'm sure there must be easy ways to create placeholder files on the Macintosh). > TextEdit application Textedit Menu -> Preferences. That lousy option turns out to be one of two in the Morton's Fork of choices that Apple provides the Macintosh user. It turns out that, if you choose that option, you *lose* the option of saving as the other available file formats using the default text editor. And, if you choose the only other option, you have to first save as the wrong format, in order to subsequently convert the file to the right format (and ok a dialog box warning you of any adverse effects). > For a better plain text editor, look for TextWrangler. > Not sure the URL for download. Given only two (IMHO, both idiotic) options available in the default text editor, I can easily see why everyone advocates a better text editor than the one that Apple provides on the Macintosh by default! Thanks!

You can do it in one compound step: Select the text you will paste and drag it to the desktop. It will create an ascii vessel for you called a .textclipping.
