#73414 — Safari freezes whole system

SubjectSafari freezes whole system
Message-ID<mgu58u$rj3$2@dont-email.me>
I was browing a web page with Safari. This one, specifically:
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/taking-back-detroit/explore-detroit.html

...when my whole Mac froze up. I could move the mouse pointer but no
response from any mouse clicks or keyboard input. After about a minute I
initiated a sysdiagnose (ctl-optn-cmd-shift-.), and after about 15
minutes even the mouse pointer was frozen. So I forced a powerdown and
reboot.

I can't see anything in the system long from between when the freeze
started and when I initiated the sysdiagnose. Any ideas?

Only half of Mac users use that POS. Tell you something?

Safari is the only web browser that actually renders fonts properly.
Firefox and Chrome both look like shit.

Why buy a Mac and use OS X, which has the best font rendering of any OS
ever made, if you're going to spend your time reading weirdly distorted
fonts?

Boy MacOS just hates you doesn't it. Sorta warms my heart.

Does this site work with Chrome or some other non-Webkit browser?

Does this site work with Safari from another account on the same Mac?

Does this site work with Safari from another Mac running the same OS you
are using (hint: the Apple Store will help with this)?

If you try the site at another location like a Starbucks or, maybe, an
Apple Store at their Genius Bar, does it freeze?

Just some of the things I'd try...

I don't think the site is the problem. That's just what I happened to be
doing when the system froze. And it's not repeatable, anyway. I have
revisited that site without any problem.

I was hoping someone might spot something relevant in the attached
system log that I couldn't spot.

It works of for me. I'm using AdBlock and DisconnectMe, though.
You might want to give them a try - I see many sites blocked. Heh.

Run with Activity Monitor. Is Safari Web Content seizing all the real memory?

IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent seems to be for connecting to iChat and maybe
other stuff.

DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit seems to be to avoid memory problems when
connecting to iOS.

<http://www.nationalgeographic.com/taking-back-detroit/explore-detroit.html>
seems to download several MB, but when I click Information in Activity
Monitor, Safari seems to use less memory after loading that page. Go
figure!

I think something was fooling your memory management, and restarting
fixed it.

I've had similar problems with Safari (although it is, by far, my favorite browser). Then, I shutdown Safari and startup Firefox and then continue on my merry way. Not that that's a solution.
