#73017 — Yosemite .3 update whacked some apps and limits

SubjectYosemite .3 update whacked some apps and limits
Message-ID<XpKdnQAR5v0smLXInZ2dnUU7-QGdnZ2d@giganews.com>

1Password (v5):	Lost registration data. Had to re-enter license.

Unison (2.1.x: Lost license data and all newsgroups and rules. Not sure
where to recover them from (low priority). (I have the license key).

Max number of files I can open simultaneously in a test program is 254.
Down from 2558 as reported in an earlier thread.
issued ulimit -n 4000. Can now open 3998.

XQuartz fails to run. Re-installed. Wireshark can't find the
ethernet... (seen that before I think, so maybe ok).

Bummer. Thus far I haven't seen any problems with the update on two
Macs, but I don't use any of the software you mentioned. Good luck!

I opened XQuartz and it offered me an update. In extracting the update,
it got hung up, with XQuartz using a lot of CPU. I quit.

The installer for the new version is in Documents. I'll bet it couldn't
be installed with XQuartz running, but that's what it tried to do when I
clicked the button.

I don't remember why I installed XQuartz.

I haven’t had that problem at all.

Actually Unison 2.2 works *better* in 10.10.3 - I can actually use it now.

I override my ulimit anyway..

Hm… I’ll have to try this.

No problem here with XQuartz. No updated needed and it worked fine..

Does it download multipart binaries properly now?

Let's see...

Nope. It's still shit.

(if there many parts and I have unison set to DL 8 parts at a time, then
8 parts should be DL'd concurrently. 2.2 does not do that).

Your quote delimiter needs a space after the two dashes.
"-- ", not "--".

I don't use Unison for binaries.. so I couldn't imagine 10.10.3 resolving that.

Perhaps when Hogwasher 5 comes out of beta you'll have a mac-based solution
again.

Not here on 6 Macs with 1Password.

Your test program is broken or badly coded. The hard limit in OS X for
open files has been unlimited for a while, and before that it was 64K.

> XQuartz fails to run.

That would be an XQuartz problem. What do they have to say about it?

(also, less than 1% of 1% of Mac users care about XQuartz).

It's coded to open (and leave open) as many files as possible until an
IO error is returned. See below.

> open files has been unlimited for a while, and before that it was 64K.

See Mezei's Virtual memory thread earlier this week. Replies by Baker
and Cruz seem to say different.

If, in a new terminal session:
       Alans-iMac:opsware alanbrowne$ ulimit -a

core file size (blocks, -c) 0
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
       file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
       open files (-n) 256 <****
       pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1
       stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
       cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
       max user processes (-u) 709
       virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited

You can see the "open files" limit is 256.

Prior to .3 that limit was 2560 (as I last checked during the Mezei thread).

I didn't set that and it has nothing to do with the program coding. (If
I set -n to, say, 4000, then I get 3998 open files.).

Just tested it for 8,000 files by changing ulimit -n. No problem.
Opened 7998 files.

So, something related to the .3 update changed that limit.

>

Runs fine now (the same version). But had to re-install it.

>
> (also, less than 1% of 1% of Mac users care about XQuartz).

Possibly but I use inkscape occasionally and wireshark from time to time
so it's an issue. Others use XQuartz for other things.

That is not the hard limit. Try ulimit -Ha instead.

The SOFT limit.

Which isn't the point. The point is that .3 changed it for no good
reason as well as causing other issues.

I suspect the soft limit gets raised "on demand" by certain utilities.

The update whacked iPhoto for me. I had updated iPhoto to the
latest 9.6.1 on one of my two 10.10 volumes, but when I was booted on my
second 10.10 volume, the MAS didn't offer me up the iPhoto 9.6.1 update.
After installing 10.10.3 on that volume, it said the iPhoro 9.6 was
incompatible and there was no way to update it. Luckily I was able to
copy the installed iPhoto 9.6.1 from the other volume to that one.

Probably because iPhoto has been replaced with Photos. New app. I
don't use either enough to be able to figure out the differences based

If you don't have iPhoto 9.6.3, it will get "whacked." It doesn't get
deleted (even Apple aren't that Scientologistic) but it gets one of
those grey circles through it. Even if it's 9.6.2. Assholes. And you
can't upgrade it anymore, of course. Assholes.

Lightroom is a better app anyway.

How can I get the MAS to offer me iPhoto 9.6.3? I'm guessing since I
already updated iPhoto to 9.6.3 on one volume, that the MAS thinks I
already have it and won't offer it to me on the other volume.

I didn't have this problem with Unison but oddly, VLC which I use almost
daily, after the update, the OSX came up that "this program was downloaded
from the internet" box, clicked once to run, it's been fine.

The only other thing was the Remote Access/VNC stuff, I have 3 shortcuts on
the desktop to connect to 3 different machine desktops and all of them (or
whatever is underneath) lost the login/password to connect. Re-entered those
and they have been fine since too.

Nothing else besides those two things note worthy.
