Dear friends:

I understand that Yosemite today's update replaces Aperture and iPhoto by a
new Apple product.

But are Aperture or iPhoto *deleted* from the Mac's hard disk when
upgrading? Or can both products be used after upgrading?

If you did the upgrade, could you check this issue for me?

Thanks a lot again.

I never installed Aperture as I have a Lightroom-Photoshop workflow.
However, I had iPhoto, unused, in mothballs, and gathering dust in my
Applications folder. It has vanished since my update to OSX 10.10.3,
and seems to have gone off to that wasteland for End of Life apps.
I imagine that since Aperture was payware Apple cannot arbitarily
remove it from an owner's hard drive. It can just make it inoperable
with future OSX updates.

Interesting. I installed the update, and iPhoto is still there. I've never
used it either.

I have just searched my entire system for iPhoto and all I could find
was an antique version on an old backup drive. I don't have a trace or
even a lingering bouquet of my last working edition of iPhoto, which
was functioning under OSX 10.10.2.

I just checked on *Photos* and it seems to me that Apple has thrown in
the towel when it comes to digital imaging software. Even on iOS
devices Pixelmator, Snapseed, and the various Adobe offerings leave
what Apple has delivered in the dust. That is kind of sad, considering
the potential they had with Aperture.

Photos is a rudimentary tool for uncritical snapshot shooters. It isn't
in anyway an Aperture replacement.

Didn't Apple already tell us that? Didn't they tell us that they
cooperated with Adobe to enable import of an Aperture library into LR?

Not in so many words. They implied that *Photos* would be an iPhoto
replacement, retaining much of the capability of that program, with
some of the function of Aperture included. Personally I believe they
failed both iPhoto and Aperture users.

Actually they didn't tell us that at all. They were encouraging iPhoto
& Aperture users to see the new app. That Aperture-to-Lightroom
initiative was taken by Adobe alone, just to benefit Lightroom sales
and expand CC subscriptions. I think it worked.

Photos is intended to replace iPhoto *and* Aperture. So far, it's
better than iPhoto.

It is also quantitatively better. It does more. It is faster. It is more
stable. Its editing capabilities are better.

It is in all ways better than the most recent version of iPhoto for OS X.

I ran them side by side, in fact. Photos simply kicks iPhoto's ass.

I guess your expectations for either are not particularly high.

...and that doesn't make it a good photo editor/manager. What you are
saying is, one not so good editor is better than another not so good
editor. Then I guess the intended user isn't going to be in the market
for a real photo editor such as Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, PSE,
Lightroom, or Photoshop.

Question:

iPhoto has the ability to connect to iPhoto on other computers to copy
selections of photos to the local folders. (poor man's sync).

Does the new Photos have the same ability to connect to a remote iPhoto?

In other words, I have my main iPhoto database on a Snow Leopard
machine. Can Photos on my Yosemite laptop connect to iPhotos on desktop
and copy pictures ?

Or is sneakernet involve, with iPhotos exporting bunch of photos on a
USB key and then you import them on Photos on laptop ? (is is generally
faster anyways).

Well, no. There is no connectivity with iPhoto. All your versions of
Photos will show all your photos, however.

Photos does nothing with iPhoto but a one time read of the iPhoto
Library.

Not relevant at all. I said it was better than iPhoto, you claimed that
was "my opinion." No, it is not my opinion, it *is* better.

Where did I say it was? What I said was that it was better than iPhoto.
You chose to argue with me, several times. You were wrong.

The vast majority of Mac users have been using iPhoto exclusively since
it was introduced. Most users do not purchase Aperture, Lightroom, PSE,
or anything else.

You are being stupid. Photos is faster than iPhoto. It has better
editing capabilities than iPhoto. It has better face recognition than
iPhoto. It is, by any objective measure, a better product than iPhoto.

You keep claiming it is not, but have offered not a shred of evidence.
Most the things you've said about Photos are factually incorrect.

In relativistic terms, then: who gives a fuck? We don't use those

Classic goal post moving there, Warren. Really, worthy of some of our

No I don't -- I don't use iPhoto at all. I'm just trying to avoid having
to deal with the oul' Woman's iPhoto v. Photos problems. She's still
whinging about Eudora (can't blame her really, either, but it's gone, it
is what it is, you do you, haters gonna hate, talk to the hand, there's
no there there).

Right now I'm wondering why the fucking 10.3 update is trickling so

Pace fanboys, it's not my router nor my wireless; not my ISP nor my
network settings: it's the App Store being slow. If my internet

Replying to myself: so I cancelled the download ("12 hours remaining" -
assholes) and went to the support page where I could download the "combo
update" and it comes in at my line speed. This is one of the richest
companies on earth; you'd think they could afford a faster server and

I don't know if the combo update will work.
