Okay, so one time? In band camp? Michael Vilain <vilain@NOspamcop.net> was all, like:

Well, they probably said "obsolete" or "vintage." Vintage does not mean
"we don't sell that computer" it means, iirc, "We haven't sold that
computer for 5 years. Or 7 if you're in California."

Apple no longer carries any parts for anything that has been out of
production for 7 years or longer.

It was amazing, this mystic business. You tell them a lie, and then when
you don't need it any more you tell them another lie and tell them
they're progressing along the road to wisdom. Then instead of laughing
they follow you even more, hoping that at the heart of all the lies
they'll find the truth. And bit by bit they accept the unacceptable.

You've duplicated this discussion in the uk group without crossposting.
That wastes other people's time.

I did open my post to this group with a

"I posted this to comp.sys.mac.misc then realised that wasn't the group
I had intended - this one seems to be populated by such nice people :)"

I may need to retract part of that.

:)

You're right; some times I am not nice.

But the OP in this thread makes no mention of duplication. The dup. I
referred to is here and the UK group.

Just a wish for future posting!

You won't get a battery replacement at the Genius Bar - it's not a tech
repair centre, plus Apple's MacBooks are now difficult to open. It's
unlikely you would even get a repair centre to do it while you wait
either since it is fairly time consuming.

If you're willing to pay extra, a repair centre may do it as an
"Urgent" job and you could get the laptop back the same day (assuming
you drop it off early enough in the morning).

Didn't Apple used to have repair centers in their stores in the past? I
always thought they could quickly repair hardware products, like
swapping parts (e.g., drives and batteries) in their own stores. :(

Depends on the store. The Apple store in Downtown Palo Alto sends stuff
like logic board replacement or screen repairs to a centralized repair
center. They will repair an cracked iphone screen while you wait. Why?
That's where the money is.

Per other post - Genius Bar sorted it within the hour.

They may or may not be able to do it, depending if they have the battery
in stock. Even if you call ahead and they say they have it, they may not
by the time you show up. I went to an Apple Store for this exact same reason,
and they didn't have any replacement batteries on hand. But they said that
another Apple Store a 20 minute train ride away did, and they were able to
arrange a while-I-wait repair at that location for the same evening.

YMMV, of course.

I've had people at Apple Stores go to great lengths on a regular basis.
When I had to have a drive replaced the original estimate was 4 days
since they didn't have a replacement drive in inventory.

As it turned out, one of the employees went to another store to get a
drive, replaced mine, got my computer back to me the next day, and then
ferried the ordered replacement to the other store to make up their
inventory.

I didn't find out about this until a month or three later.
