Invalid Certificate Chain.

More likely, Toth's certificate handling is broken in some way.

Switch to plain NNTP instead of SSL.

I don't use Thoth, but I'd expect it to be in whatever dialog you use to
configure the server information. There's probably a checkbox labeled
something like "Use secure connection".

Since it has nothing to do with the end user, it is probably not fixable
by the end user.

You could "fix" it by not using SSL, but I wouldn't. I'd just get a
client written by a competent programmer instead of a petulant thief.

You don't want or need to turn off SSL. You want to accept Astroweb's
expired and no longer valid certificate.

In Thoth, go to Edit>News Server Settings menu and select your
Astroweb server, ie. 'news.astraweb.com'. Under the SSL heading, tick
the Allow Bad Certificates.

If my assumptions pan out, you should be good to go.

HTH.

That’s the funny thing about getting certificates (or domain registrations
or whatever) that only expire after 10 or 20 years. People think it makes
them look more professional/stable, but what it really does is make people
forget about it, especially if 2 or 3 people cycle through the job over
the years. Then everyone is surprised when the inevitable happens.
Better (maybe?) that it was on a Monday than a Friday.

No, it's Astraweb's cert is out of date. MTNW reports it, but lets me

You should of tried astraweb.com, would of worked better.

Plus most news systems that support SSL usually use different machines and
hostnames (ssl-us.astraweb.com vs. news.astraweb.com).
