I have heard that linux runs well on aapl hardware, you don't say
if that's an option for you

I think yosemite runs on those imacs you mention with no problems

Not much need to run Linux when OS X is Unix at the corei, is gnerally
more problem-free and easier to use than Linux distributions, and most
*nix software compiles and runs fine on OS X.

nowadays this comparison is not true

the big difference in linux vs. macosx is that linux can be
configured to individual tastes to a finer degree than macosx

that finer degree would include easily modifying the source of any
app you use on linux

Provided that you are in the rather small group of individuals who have
the skill and willingness to do that.

> that finer degree would include easily modifying the source of any

Ditto, but even moreso. What percentage of Mac (and include Windows if
you like) users do you suppose have ever even *used* a compiler, much
less know how to actually modify source code and get it running?

You relaize you're supporting my claim that the comparison doesn't
apply nowadays, or at least now you do

if you sit someone down in front of a mac or linux they login and
use the web and maybe spreadsheet or doc editor and media
maybe email app but a lot use web email so it's a wash because
as you say most stick to the basics and modifying source is
inconceivable for them

the upside goes to linux just because of the finer degree of configuration
and not just in modifying source but editing config files to change
default behaviour and sometimes the degree is nauseating but it's
there if you have want/need

Linux was not designed to be a desktop environment. Just look at all
the shitty distros that keep moving the deck chairs w/o improving
anything substantial. Linux whether veneered in KDE or Gnome or any of
the other varnishes, universally blow.

Linux is fantastic in databases, servers, communications (internet and
other), controllers, widgets and so on and so forth. It just blows for
common people oriented tasks.

Further, the heavyweights of the user environment ignore Linux (Adobe,
Microsoft, etc.). So creatives and office workers avoid it (or the IT
people avoid it for them as they don't want the headaches).

Microsoft is a heavyweight? Adobe?
what would M$ bring to linux?

your assertions don't really reflect reality

a lot of companies don't see the desktop linux market as big enough
but some companies do not have the luxury of eliminating market spaces
from their targets

apps that don't suck.

openoffice is not fully compatible with microsoft office and there is
nothing that comes close to adobe photoshop or lightroom.

The phrase you're groping for is "non sequitur": two separate latin

Yes, it is.

Nope. OS X is more usable in general. There are also fewer problems,
fewer compatibility issues, and the problems that do exist are more
easily solved or worked around than in Linux systems.

You can modify any open source in OS X as well - and there is a lot.

Duh
But can I modify preview to change the defaults
No
app defaults hardcoded is more like aapl steering people away
from using it to some other app or trying to reduce support
issues in macosx by making all the core apps static

Does aapl make a graphics app for sale?

one app. nothing is perfect. write your own app to do whatever you
want, just like you would have to do in linux.

> Does aapl make a graphics app for sale?

no.

there are many, many exceptional third party graphics apps so there's
no need for them to bother.

note that none of those run on linux nor will they ever.

Haha, well thank for that, this is a compatibility issue that is
managed by aapl

Far as I know most apps have default behaviors that cannot be changed
although the mail program does let you change some things but that
is more due to historic reasons and the fact that aapl had to
work with mail "standards".

so then begs the question of why not let the user modify default
settings

plus it throws a bone to ISVs

Of course you don't know but just lashing out
you don't need to but if you must

Give an example of this...

Because real software design is making choices and not just saying "let
the user decide everything".

Why don't you change the defaults of your undoubtedly open-source
Linux-based newsclient to remove all the blank lines at the end of your
posts?

Many more than I care to list. I don't need to prove anything to you.
I have had enough years of direct experience with Linux and OS X to know
the difference.

Just as with any closed source software, which, BTW, exists in Linux as
well as Windows, and just about every other platform out there. OS X is
no different.

That's a pretty silly statement. Preview is a closed source preview
application that happens to have very basic editing support. If you
dislike they way it works, nobody is stopping you from using something
else. Stop bitching and moaning and do what your wonderful Linux
operating system mandates of its users: tinker with other (even open
source) software until you figure out a better way for yourself. Several
alternatives have been mentioned in this thread that you might try. Or
just shut up and deal with it.

AAPL is a stock symbol, and stock symbols don't make any software.

Can you really be this stupid?

For instance, is it your marvelous open-source, Linux software that's
adding all the blank lines at the end of your posts?

It'd be a small public service to trim.

And...

...how many people have shown an interest in EVER wanting to do that?
