Oddly, this fixed the icon displayed in the dock (changed it
from the Applications folder to a disk icon).

And this now comes close to the Apple menu. The white font on
a translucent black background is tolerable, but the contents of
aliases are not listed. I have an Applications alias in my root
dir (have no idea what put it there) that didn't work until after
I hovered over the actual Applications folder and let it list,
but my other alias (/Library/Documentation/User Information)
doesn't work, at all.
So, to sum up, so far it's close, but no cigar.

Not "oddly" at all... ...since that what that suggestion was designed to change. Displaying as a "Stack" gives you the icon of one of the items in the folder/volume. There are clearly some internal rules about which icon that vary because if you have your Downloads folder displayed as a Stack in the Dock, the icon it displays is always the most recently added item. > >> Right-click the Dock icon again. In addition to the one that doesn't work via the dock
(Docs) in the Apple menu I have my home dir and the
Utilities folder directly available. I can also add
anything else I'd like to directly access, without
having to create aliases in the filesystem itself.

It's an alias, that I'm reasonably certain came with the OS. It does
work, in the sense that if clicked the folder will open. Just hovering
over it does not display what's in the folder, though.

Not oddly at all; that's what it's supposed to do. If you look at an icon when set to Display as Stack, you'll see that it's actually a bunch of files and/or folders stacked one behind the other. > And this now comes close to the Apple menu. (I turned off translucency, otherwise, it would be on a translucent white background.) Starting with either Snow Leopard or Mavericks, there's a submenu that opens when you point at a folder item.

It has quantifiable more features. I wasn't talking about the Classic menu when I said that. I can see where it might have looked that way, though. I was referring to the line "It replicates a feature of System 7 that was useful *in system 7* and is far less useful in OS X" That's the opinion part that I don't agree with. It has quantifiable more features. except for putting a hierarchical menu in the menubar. and it's not a question of how many features but how easy it is to use. if number of features was all that mattered, emacs would win. apple products generally have *fewer* features than the competition but the ones they do have are implemented better.
