The problem is that when the dock is over a window because you want to make use of that space, whenever you try to move the mouse in that area of your application's window, the dock comes up over the window and receives mouse events. So at the end of the day, you still have to position your windows far enough away from where the dock "trigger" is so that you don't trigger the dock opening when you work in your app's window. I find it simpler to permanently reserve the space by having dock always on. Makes it obvious where your app windows should be and you can have the mouse on the left side of your application widnows and not trigger dock opening over it since the dock is aoready opened and outside (to the left) of your window.

On my system, the Dock doesn't appear until the mouse pointer is one pixel from the bottom edge of the screen.

Nope, because you can change the delay for when the dock appears. I very occasionally use the dock on my laptop, so I have the delay set rather high. I use the dock on my 27" iMac a lot more, so the default delay is fine since it rarely gets in my way (though a tad more in 10.10 which sometimes "dock hops"). -- We all need help with our feelings. It replicates a feature of System 7 that was useful *in system 7* and is far less useful in OS X. I can put folders in the dock and app shortcuts in the dock and replicate everything ClassicMenu does, only better and with larger targets. Or I can use a utility like Launchbar (or various other tools like Launchbar... Quicksilver et al) to do everything ClassicMenu does, everything the Dock does, and much much more. -- 'In the Fyres of Struggle let us bake New Men, who Will Notte heed the old Lies.'

I quickly got annoyed at the Dock appearing and disapearing whenever the mouse was near the edge. I have my dock vertical (2D mode) and always on. Since screens are wider rather than taller, this makes better use of real estate. The "always on" nature makes it far less annoying. And BTW, you can put a disk on there and then navigate to folders etc like on the old Apple menu. I complain about many things, but the dock isn't one of them (as long as I can have it vertical and in 2D mode).

I dragged the boot disk to the dock. The Applications
folder icon appeared, not the device. I clicked on it
and got a display of all the root folders, so it was ok
regardless of the wrong icon. From there, clicking on
anything opens it, so then there's another batch of
icons. Etc. Icon view folder after icon view older.
Speaking of old.
The Apple menu displays lists, which are, for me, easier
to use. Icons are there, too, to the left of the names,
ala the list or columns folder views. Click the Apple,
drag the mouse cursor where you want to be, let it go,
and you're there.
