And I never said the Apple menu was "necessary"... just more elegant and convenient. You're reading something into my words that isn't there. I never said the dock wouldn't do what you say it does. I find the dock to be more of a distraction, and I don't find it adds anything I need. I've found something that I think works better, and fits my workflow. Oddly enough, I also give myself what I want.
In this case, elegant and convenient is the old

It looks good in the computer shop, and sells hardware.

| Apple Sales is in love with the Dock. You can't go into an Apple
| store without seeing it splayed across the bottom of the screen, in
| the very configuration least conducive to computing on a Macintosh.
| Why? Because it's sexy and it sells. It makes that bright, shiny new
| Apple look simple, approachable, and beautiful. It makes for a great
| demo, but not a great product. [...]
| The problem does not lie with the Dock itself - if it makes a great
| demo, leave it in - but with Apple's apparent belief that it is a
| complete solution. The Dock is akin to a brightly-colored set of
| children's blocks, ideal for your first words - dog, cat, run, Spot,
| run - but not too effective for displaying the contents of War and
| Peace. [...]

Certainly as delivered the Duck is not very good. First thing I do is move it to the left of the screen where it takes up less space. Reduce the icon size and magnification, and I have something quite useful. I also throw out toys that I never use, such as Mail. The Dock could be better. Such as it would be nice to be able to group docs together when they belong together. E.g. I have a TextWrangler window and a Safari window that belong together and it would be nice if I could have a Dock section where they go together - and to where they'd get minimised again after use. As it is I have to minimise them, and then move them there by hand. -- "Once you adopt the unix paradigm, the variants cease to be a problem - you bitch, of course, but that's because bitching is fun, unlike M$ OS's, where bitching is required to keep your head from exploding." - S Stremler in afc

I do this, too, but to the right. I dump everything, so only running
programs and minimized windows remain. At that point, for me, it's only
displaying useful info.

Wait a minute... you don't get away that easy. For the record, I PROOFREAD for a living, and my wife is an English teacher so, yeah, I have a passing acquaintance with language usage. It's NOT a figure of speech (metaphor, simile, euphemism, idiom, or hyperbole) it's a presumptive statement. You presumed what I know... and you're dead wrong. I don't use the Dock. After playing around with it a decade ago, I decided I didn't need it. I give it another shot in every new OS, but I've never used it for more than a day or two, so, NO, I don't "well know" anything about it. >>>> Then you'd know that I use Dragthing in my workflow, which puts a >>>> series of popup drawers on the bottom edge of the screen, as well as >>>> along the right and, sometimes, left side of my screen. You're reading something I didn't say. AGAIN. I never said it was a dealbreaker. I said that I don't find any use for it. I'd get rid of it permanently, if I could. Since I can't, I minimize it's effects, and use what suitable replacements. Never said it was a "dealbreaker". Never said it, or implied it. Those are YOUR words. >> What is it about the dock that makes it indispensable? > > Nothing. What did I ever say that suggested otherwise? Here we disagree. Actually, it is indispensable… but only because the Finder wouldn't work without it, and for it's part in other background processes. Otherwise I WOULD kill it permanently. You're a proofreader by profession, and your wife is an English teacher, so you have a passing acquaintance with language usage, yet you type "it's" when the correct word is "its"???? Oh, by the way, the fact that you discard the Dock implies that you well know it, and have made your decision based on that knowledge. Otherwise, you're admitting that you decided for reasons other than knowledge.

I've said this about a billion times. After finishing a 10 hour shift, I don't want to spend another minute working when I get home. And I don't WRITE the copy, I READ it. I almost never proofread my own copy, not for free, anyway :-) I'm not a proofreader, by profession. I proofread for a living, yes... but it's only a part of the pre-press/platemaking process. It's not strictly for content, but more for color break, as well as typography. That being said I sure as shit know what a "common figure of speech" is... and "as well you know" is a direct statement, and an incorrect one at that. > Oh, by the way, the fact that you discard the Dock implies that you > well know it, and have made your decision based on that knowledge. Where is it implied? Implying is stating something indirectly. You *inferred* something... I decided not to use Microsoft WORD a long time ago. Does that imply that I know it well? Not really... but I know it well enough to know that I can do everything I need to do without it. > Otherwise, you're admitting that you decided for reasons other than > knowledge. I know enough to make an informed decision, and that's all that's required. When I needed to change newsreaders for Mavericks, I test drove just about all of them. When I got to Unison 2, I took one look at the font size, and dismissed it out of hand. Once I found out for sure that I couldn't change the font size, I didn't NEED to know any more about it. It was all the knowledge required to make an informed decision. After I had two kids, I didn't even bother to look at two seater sports cars anymore, either. I know enough about the dock to know that any functionality I might need can be provided more efficiently by other means. Dragthing alone does just about everything the dock can do, and is infinitely more customizable than the dock. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits.

It is both a direct statement, and in some parts of the country, it is a figure of speech.

You'd be surprised at what people miss when copy checking and color correcting. The human brain is a strange thing... http://brainden.com/images/same-color-illusion-big.png (Square A and B are exactly the same color). There are a series of optical illusions that probe just how easy it is to see something that's not there - or gloss over huge glaring things that are. Proofing is sometimes more Zen than not. You can get into a weird trance like state after a while. http://www.moillusions.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Sharp_Mind_Illusion_1.jpg How many people really look at something like the "Amazon" logo, and will actually notice that the little "smiley" arrow is actually pointing out that they carry everything from A to Z? I was reading an item that I'd read regularly, at least once every couple of months, for at the last ten years. I was daydreaming while copychecking it one day, and caught a misspelling that I (and everybody else) had missed for years. It was an ingredient in a cosmetic product, so it's not like you'd ever see it in your daily life... "TETRADIBUTYL PENTAERITHRITYL HYDROXYHYDROCINNAMATE", I think. So, yeah... "it's" sometimes slips by... -- "Primitive life is very common, and intelligent life is fairly rare. Some would say it has yet to occur on Earth.” -Hawking

I've seen the same words, but done up in a triangle, with the double words at the end of one line and the beginning of another. For some reason, it makes it a lot harder to spot. -- Every day, computers are making people easier to use.

And in back in real life, that particular illustration of that illusion is WRONG. A and B are NOT exactly the same colour. (FPP, go use one of those "useless" tools that come with Mac OS X and see for yourself: DigitalColor Meter; you can't erase that, either.)

digitalcolor meter says {120,120,120} for both.

No, they are not.

Look further. The entire B square is {120,120,120}, but only one corner
of the A square is that colour.
