They wanted that last year, and the year before that... that doesn't explain why they're changing it now, nor does it explain that these changes will do anything positive. What they appear to want is to draw those with iOS devices to the Mac by making the Mac look like an iOS device. One possibility is that simpler "flat" icons, etc. will make it easier (and use up less storage and RAM) for the user interface to be changed to resolution independent vector formats, instead of the current bitmap-based ones.

A keyboard unwired is not as handy as a mouse unwired. My keyboard sits on a desk and seems happy enough, its tail going back under the monitor. It did try once to escape, a few years back, I sat down to find out what was making it so unhappy? It turned out that I don't eat at the desk and it is jealous of its mates who have owners dropping them crumbs. I promised to fix it, this is the deal I offered, if it tries to escape again, I will get an axe and silence its cheeky big-mouth. -- dorayme

At this stage the OS should handle both display types. When Apple eventually moves it's entire product line to Retina displays *and* the OS is no longer installable on old Macs, then Retina-only will be okay. Rumouredly a Retina screened iMac (or possibly stand-alone display) is coming before Christmas, but I'm not sure I'd hold my breath for the iMac. Of course the whole thing is getting into a bit of a confused mess with "HD", "Retina" (at varying resolutions), "4K" and higher, and the rather stupid "Ultra-HD" that TV manufacturers are now pushing (with no real "Ultra-HD" content to watch on them!).

I have a great universal remote for my home entertainment equipment. Just because I buy a new receiver and monitor, should I just stop using it because it's old? It's old and discontinued, but it's still the best remote I've used in my life. The Apple Menu was one of the great innovations in Mac OS history. OSX was another. Telling me that I shouldn't have the best of both worlds is rather shortsighted... I'm not clinging to old technology - I'm clinging to GOOD technology. Classic Menu returns a functionality that I use every single time I sit down at my machine. Just because Apple fell in love with the Dock (which I really have absolutely no use for) is no reason to discard one of the really bright aspects of the old Mac OS. With a single click, I can literally navigate to any folder or file in any of the 9 volumes on my system, and related network. I was in the minority back in the early 90's too. That's when Apple was on it's last 6 months worth of operating capital. They turned it around, and created one of the greatest comebacks in business history. >> We have light grey (neutral) desktop backgrounds so as to not distract >> when color matching. I own 2 iPads, one full sized, and a retina mini. I'm on a fiber optic network. I have 2 iPods. I own over 600 blu-rays. I print my projects on a $17,000 Epson proofing system (admittedly, at work). And you're saying I'm clinging to old technology and stuck in the past because I use something like Classic menu, which is light years ahead of the dick, sorry... dock, in terms of functionality? I think I've kept up quite nicely in terms of technology, thank you. BTW... what are use cases? -- Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty... and the pig LIKES it.

Then you'd know that I use Dragthing in my workflow, which puts a series of popup drawers on the bottom edge of the screen, as well as along the right and, sometimes, left side of my screen. The dock takes up real estate I'd rather use for something else. The Apple menu doesn't take up any real estate. But then, you knew that was what I was doing, right? -- All generalizations are false.

Your contention was (as phrased by YOU) that the Apple menu was necessary because it could let you look at all your drives in a hierarchical menu. Well guess what, sunshine: the Dock can DO that! I do it all the time with permanent dock "folders" for hard drives and network shares.
