You need to be running 10.4.11 on that machine though, I do on my
M8573LL.

It can run as high as 10.5 (and I have it available on an external HD),
but with 10.4 you can use third party software like FruitMenu and Labels
X, maybe do a little hacking on your own on the folder icons if you're
so inclined, and feel like you're back on good 'ol System 7.

What's up with you tools, System 7 on my Mac Plus does everything I
need.

Not really, but every time Apple makes a change people grumble about it.
Every time Apple *doesn't* make a change, people grumble about it. It's
just icons looking a bit different, folks (sure there are some other
changes, but those are the ones that are getting ttention currently).

I think the 10.10 look and feel (from what I have seen of it in
articles, I have not installed it) looks like it harks back to classic
Mac interface design in many ways. It looks clean, simple and neat. I
am glad to see skeumorphism- however it's spelled- going away.

That is good news, since I have never known what the word means and now

I had a good chuckle observing how quickly the word leapt into common usage
in the geek community.

Heh. There were some things about System 6 & 7 that made that OS faster
than OS X, despite having 1% of the hardware power.

System 1-7 application launching was fast because everything was layers
of resources. ROM <- System <- Application <- Open Files. Almost
everything that an app needed was in ROM. The System layer was just a
few bug fixes. The Application layer was a small amount of code and GUI
descriptors. Its amazing efficiency was matched only by the labor
required to keep it working after updates. It had to be phased out.

"Classic" Finder was fast because it needed very little metadata. What
it did need was found in a well cached database maintained by HFS. OS X
Finder needs to hit the disk hundreds or thousands of times to collect
all the metadata for displaying folder. The technical claims for this
change are questionable. (My bet is that Apple lacked multithreading
skills needed for the original design on multi-core systems.)

OS 10.3's rendering of previously created icons of 4500 image files
in a folder is at least a thousand times faster than 10.9 on the same
folder.

So what you might be observing is one OS using the icon data already
stored in the resource fork of the file while the other is rendering an
icon live from the image data...

The other should be using the same stored data. "Show icon preview"
is not enabled. 10.9 is as well generally a slug even when rendering
plain old stock icons. To be sure, I'm talkng about folders in the
icon view mode ("as Icons" selected in the View menu).

Anyone can gather up 10.9's icons/icns/gifs/jpegs/tiffs/whatever and
blast the entire lot into 10.10.

The Finder icon should be a photo of Johnny Ives which you can throw
darts at. ;-)

Or maybe it should have a red nose and clown make-up to say it's a big

Twitter stopped making its "Twitter App" available for Snow Leopard. New
versions require the more recent versions of OS-X. So the lack fo
software is going to start to become more and more visibvle over time.

I saw that happen with Leopard on a PPC system. It became increasingly
difficult to find PPC versions of software, and various sites withdrew
PPC versions, presumably because they no longer had the hardware to support
them.

Web 2.0 was the real killer for my PowerBook. It simply couldn't keep up
with JavaScript heavy sites.

To each her or his own, of course. I haven't needed to run Eudora for
/many/ years; Apple Mail and Microsoft's mail clients have served me

As for QuickTime 7 Pro, I don't know how the rumor began that it
doesn't run under Mavericks, but I assure you that I have five licenses
for QT7 Pro and it runs fine on my five Macs running Mavericks.
