#62428 — Safari prefs not showing and crashing

SubjectSafari prefs not showing and crashing
Message-ID<do_ray_me-41852C.22453125072014@aioe.org>
Since I used a combo latest update for Snow Leopard to fix a corrupted
App Store App, my Safari is not able to get Preferences from under the
Safari menu. Nothing happens the first time. The second time I click
the Preferences command, Safari quits suddenly/crashes. This is a
repeatable phenomenon on my MB at the moment.

I have many other good browsers but am not quite ready to give up on
Safari or Snow Leopard. Software Update under the Apple menu reports
none available (I have the latest and it is not being updated beyond
this for this OS). Disk Utility reports no problems. The only new
software bought for the last week has been 'Media Inspector'.

Any suggestions besides redoing an update?

You might try trashing your Safari preferences .plist file(s), as that
seems to be where your problem lies.

So, quit Safari, then go to Users(you)->Library->Preferences, locate
(com.apple.Safari.plist) and move it to the trash. You might need to do
the same for com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist &
com.apple.Safari.Extensions.plist.

Re-open Safari and test drive.

Good luck.

Any better using the prefs shortcut (cmd+,)?

Thanks, Savageduck, I have tried trashing all such plists - missing
was yje extension one you mentioned - but something odd is happening
which I don't understand. I can get the prefs to show again by
trashing plists but it gets stuck on the Security panel of the Safari
prefs and soon after crashes and then back to square one, no prefs
will show again until I trash the plists again and so on in a circle.

I might try to find the latest combo update for Snow Leopard and try
that again? Or maybe better would be not the very latest but earlier
and use Software Update to bring it up to date...

In the meantime if anyone has any other ideas...

Have you tried just this -

Safari 5.1.10 for Snow Leopard
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1569

Just glancing at the package contents, it looks like
it'll replace everything that could be a problem.

But -- there's a lot more than just preferences files
involved here. Have you looked around to find all the
Safari/WebKit stuff in the ~/Library dir? Here there
are bookmarks, history, caches, et cetera. I'd try
deleting or moving/saving all that first.

I did trash, earlier, some webkit things in the user prefs but really,
I probably need a more systematic approach than what I have been
fooling about with.

I just recently redid the combo update for latest Snow Leopard from
Apple, and the Safari prefs would not open at all (I had to trash the
user library pref plist files for it again, that gets me the prefs
opening in Safari but not the security section).

I have taken a quick look at your url, not sure which things to focus
on there? Would not the latest 10.6.8 combo updater include the latest
of everything? My software updater, as it should, says all is up to
date.

Can't make head nor tail of console Safari crash report? Everything
else, even Safari (if I don't go near the security tab!) seems to
work. I might have to change to FF as a main browser and limp along
till i update to a higher OS!

Damn, I thought my MB was immune to trouble all these years!

Too quick a look apparently! I was surprised to see it has a later
version of Safari than is offered by the latest combo update and by
Software Update! I downloaded and installed it and on a quick test I
have my Safari prefs working including the Security tab (excellent, I
can turn off Java when I don't need it).

Thanks Billy. I won't bag you about your sig for at least 3 months and
you can take a free potshot at me using the foulest language for the
next year. <g>

If you reinstalled the 10.6.8 combo update, you need to reinstall some
subsequent updates, as parts of your system may have been downgraded,
resulting in a mixture of recent and older files.

In particular, you should reinstall the last Safari and Security updates
for Snow Leopard:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1569
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1678

In my archived copies of downloads specific to Snow Leopard, the only
other update I note which might need to be reinstalled is Snow Leopard
Migration Assistant 1.1:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1694

There was also "Mac App Store Update 1.0", only distributed via Software
Update, but you may prefer not to reinstall that as its only notable
feature is to keep bugging you to upgrade to Mavericks.

Java is probably OK because those updates were mostly independent of the
combo update, but if in doubt, reinstall the latest Java for 10.6
(update 17):

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573

Software Update is fooled by the fact it has receipts indicating that
you had previously installed the updates I mention above, which have
been partially overwritten by the combo update. If you were to delete
the receipts for those updates, Software Update would offer them again.

Thanks for these, I have already done one of them. I am installing the

I recently had trouble with this app, but now fixed. Might leave it go
for now.

Ah so! I might try that one day, but for now, everything seems ok.
Thanks for all this, most kind.
