Go write your perfect OS.

The rest of us will get on fine without one.

Yes, it's done, all right. As in "stick a fork in it, it's done"...

I was chatting with a geeky type the other day who said that Linux is
growing rapidly in the desktop gaming world... fine with me!

Yes, it is. If Linux doubled its installed user base every week, by the
end of July it'd be up to 800 users. :-D

It's just a case of user envy. Linux has been giving it away for almost
23 years and still hasn't cracked 10% market share (unless you count
Android, of course).

They always seem to forget that OS X's Darwin underpinning is a POSIX
compliant OS that can be used pretty like any other BSD-based *nix.

android doesn't count, nor do embedded devices such as routers or
thermostats.

You probably have Linux running at home in your DVD player, routers and
other devices. There are billions of them out there.

For desktop, using web stats as a measure, the Linux share is less than 2%.

Heresy! OS X has been tainted by evil commercial exploitation!

But I don't want a package manager, so the lack of one is no problem for me.

Tell me, have you stopped beating your wife yet?

Have you noticed that Apple sells more OS installs than the UNIX folks
can give away for free? There's a reason for that and it's not what
you'd think.

> FFS. Why are you using a UNIX based system without a Package Manager?
> Please tell me why!

Because it isn't needed.

OS X doesn't suffer from the wild woolie world of dependencies like
Linux and its ilk because of the efficiency of the software development
tools . The dependency situation in the *NIX OSes is as irrational as
can be, loading gigabytes of crap onto your computer just to install one
simple app- some of which is incompatible with something else and causes
conflicts. The hilarious part is that there are folks like you who think
this pig's breakfast is a good idea! That's the nonsense that makes
package managers necessary in the first place. Sane OSes have moved
beyond that malarkey.

Oh, BTW- if you really want a package manger on OS X it's trivially easy
to install one. You can choose from MacPorts, fink, brew and there may
be others I don't know about.

I'm thinking it could be because I never heard of a Package Manager,
yet I manage to get by.

Now, why are you using an operating system without benefit of Adobe CC.
Final Cut Pro, Logic X, and Microsoft Office? Does the GIMP fill all of
those needs for you?

Actually it does. Never needed Adobe CC, Final Cut Pro, or Logic X. As for Microsoft Office, I use LibreOffice which does all the stuff I want it do.

Goodie goodie gumdrops. So you don't need OS X, and therefore have no
valid reason to be posting to this newsgroup.

You can thank me for saving you all the time you would have otherwise
