You keep ignoring that I've been crystal clear in multiple posts that I
don't expect many would take on such a project for uncertain and minor
financial rewards, at best.

That changes nothing though: you've set yourself up for certain failure,
and you cannot seem to process that while you might not want to take
another approach (and certainly you don't have to - no one so far as I
see, is telling you what you must do), your current strategy is doomed,
not least of which because of your inflexibility. Hell, you won't even
put out free PR!

Just crazy...

No, I’m just baffled that you keep saying it while trying to label it as
a realistic option. Have you considered the simple possibility that
there really is *no* realistic way to drive innovation in Usenet software?
That’s certainly my null hypothesis, and Signal is my investment in
testing that. If you have some other *workable* method, offer it, because
I don’t see any point in your beating the horse you know to be dead.

I will do what works. Past evidence has not show undirected PR to work.
If you have a better method, *offer it*. Stop trying to tell me that *I*
must do more, or that *I* must charge less, or that *I* have set myself
up for failure. You clearly *still* have no idea the fullness of what
I’m doing, despite my having told you directly many times. So, again,
if you want an outcome that is different than what you say is inevitable,
tell me what *you* are willing to do to change it.

He, and sandman, and billy-boy, and the Canadian geezer whose name
escapes me at the mo, are willing to do *bugger* *all* about it, except
carp and express bafflement that you are unwilling to do the job for
nothing, on account of having bills to pay.

All they are prepared to do is jibber from the sidelines like monkeys.
Action? Fuck me no, that's too much like hard work. Put some money

if the funding effort doesn't reach a target? Fuck me no. Newsreaders

Mr Streater is, at least in my case (I will only speak for myself),
thoroughly confused some helpful suggestions with not tossing some
money at something I not only do not want, but do not need.

Speaking of bickering about irrelevant bullshit.

Indeed. I have a newsreader. If I want to deal with one "maintained" by

About Signal? Yes, that's correct. The project does not appeal to me so I
won't do anything for it. As it turns out, the person handling the project
turned out to be a really unpleasant person as well, which helped sway me
from it.

> except carp and express bafflement that you are unwilling to do the

I'll give you one million dollar if you can find a quote from me telling
him he should do it for nothing.

You guys are incredible. I've said many times that I have no problem taking
actions to achieve what I want.

> Put some money where their mouths are

I have done exactly that. My "mouth" has said that I want a new news reader
and that Signal isn't matching my current desires, and my "money" is
following that statement 100% by not funding Signal's development. You
can't get much more consistent than that.

I'd pay $100 for a good news reader without blinking an eye.

Thanks, but I paid a couple times over (to express thanks over the
years) for MacSOUP. And I've paid for many a decently priced piece of
shareware. Nor have I shied away from apps over, sometimes well over a
few dollars on the iOS app store (if it's a good app, it's worth a
decent price to me).

I'm more than happy to have paid for well made apps that fill a need or
want.

Anyway - I wouldn't have put any money into Signal, even if it hadn't
been setup to fail by Doc. He's made it clear that it's no MacSOUP
replacement, so it's of little interest to me :-) Were I an MT-NW or
Thoth afficionado I might've felt different (had it been a realistic
project).

I've bought lot's of apps over the years for Windows, OS X, iOS and
others for that matter. I don't mind paying. I donate when it's
donation ware (for s/w I use regularly (say a dozen times per year)).

That's the model I'd support for this project. Otherwise the selling
points for the project are meaningless - I've never been prevented from
reading, posting, filtering, etc. from usenet on any computer.

But hell - saying so just gets you blasted around here.

My saying repeatedly that I don't expect many would be willing to take
on a hobby style project, with an uncertain promise of low rewards, for
an app servicing a subset of an extreme niche market - is my take on
that matter.

If you consider a hobby project undertaken primarily for reasons other
than monetary considerations to be unrealistic, due to your own
financial constraints, or (completely understandably) unwillingness to
work on such a project without what you consider appropriate financial
reward, then I'd point you in the direction of many a lone developer or
team of devs who have undertaken software development for fun or other
personal and professional fulfillment.

Do or do not undertake such a project on those or whatever terms :-) But
when you come here and go on about how your way is the only reasonable
way, and it's clear you're setting yourself up for certain failure, even
more so than was initially apparent (we now know you've done next to no
PR, for example), and you tear down other more realistic paths - even
refusing to acknowledge they've been repeatedly mentioned in posts you
reply to - well, what did you really expect? Especially when it's all to
do with raising certain folk's hopes over the lack of a decent
MT-NW/Thoth replacement in 10.9.

You irritated some folk, pushed other's buttons when you raised hopes
(the MT-NW and Thoth users left out in the cold, recently in 10.9/by the
author pulling sales. Me: I still have my favourite client: MacSOUP, and
Signal seemed unlikely to serve my needs, so I'm not so bothered in that
regard), and then made it clear you were going for failure instead, and
you wonder why you've not maybe had the warmest reception here, of late.

Hmm...

Are we assuming here that Darrin's full-time job is development of this
news client, then? There's a huge difference between "I need a plan to
finance my life, my hobbies and my apartment" and "This may be a cool
product, I wonder if anyone is interested in buying it?"

Talking as someone that develops software on the side of my professional
work, I do so for *me*, and I make enough money on my regular job so that
if I want to give a project away for free, I can.

Is Darring unemployed and this money is for him to pay his mortage and buy
bread to put on the table?

Darrin should also take note.

No. The point being made by McNamara does not rely on this assumption.
But you seem so consumed by personal vindictiveness that it has led
you to misanalyse a whole lot of things. The OP does not at all appear
to be any kind of asshole. Don't know about you though, maybe you are
just another guy that is prone to burst into wild irrationality.

There are many people who can walk the tightrope of rational thinking
for a while but who *easily* - all you humans can do this from time to
time - fall off somewhere along the line.

His point concerned what someone did for a living, comparing the
situations. It sort of makes that a pretty logical assumption :)

WTF??? What on *EARTH* are you basing this on?? Upon whom or what am I
taking revenge? For what?

I didn't think so either until he started telling me whether or not I
wanted a new news reader or not, in spite of me being very clear from the
very first post that I very much want a new newsreader.

Since that hasn't happened at any point in this thread, I'm going to go
ahead and assume you responded to the wrong person here.

Yes it has. Doc said that, like a lot of people, you want something but
appear to be unwilling to do anything to make it happen. You then
accuse him of lying. I'd call that "wild irrationality".

That's the lie, yes. I am quite clearly willing to do something to make my
wishes come true. The fact that the OP's project doesn't seem to satisfy
what I want does not change this. He is basing his incorrect claim of what
I want on the fact that I won't pledge on HIS project.

> You then accuse him of lying. I'd call that "wild irrationality".

No, when someone lies about someone else - calling them liar is very
rational.

I had given him ample information about both my needs and my readiness to
support something that would satisfy them. Please reread what has been
written.

It's not a *lie*, it's *disagreement*, it's *opinion*.

By calling it a lie, you're over-reacting - I'd call that "wild
irrationality".

No, because he didn't say that I *appear* to be unwilling, he said that I
*was* unwilling, as a reply to a post of mine where I said the exact
opposite. In short, he replied to a statement of mine saying that the exact
opposite of that statement was true, when it isn't. That's lying.

Doing it once is an honest mistake, but he repeated it at which point it
becomes a deliberate misrepresentation, i.e. a lie.

You seem unwilling to go back and see for yourself, so let me help you out
here:

  Darrin "Doc" O'Leary
Re: Upcoming New Newsreader for the Mac: Signal
  06/11/2014 <lna09h$ukb$4@dont-email.me>

"I do the same, but I also run a business that sees value in
what *other* people need and use and want. Right now, I'm
trying to see if they really want a new newsreader. Some
do, some like you don't, and some people appear to have
  gone off the deep end."

My reply:

  Sandman
  06/12/2014 <slrnlpig98.tbg.mr@irc.sandman.net>

"Huh? I very much want a new newsreader."

That's me explicitly stating that I want a new newsreader. His reply:

  Darrin "Doc" O'Leary
  06/12/2014 <lnclef$uc3$1@dont-email.me>

  "No, you don't."

That's he claiming, twice, that I don't want a new newsreader, in spite of
me clearly saying that I do. At that point, it's no longer a mistake or
misunderstanding, it's an outright lie.

Rubbish. You don't know what the word means.

And I'd agree with him.

> That's he claiming, twice, that I don't want a new newsreader, in spite of

People say a lot of things, and then it turns out that, when pressed,
they back off. Doc was saying that if you want a new newsreader that
much, how about you back that up with actions, not words. Any fool can
say they might buy something in the future.

> At that point, it's no longer a mistake or
> misunderstanding, it's an outright lie.

He's challenging your assertion. Nothing wrong with that.

You remind me of one of my nieces who came to visit. She had an old car
that gave out lots of blue smoke. I suggested some cheap repairs to fix
that. She declined, saying "it's an old car" and it would "not be worth
it". So much for her left-liberal views and a "strong commitment to the
environment" (her words).
