I said I want a new newsreader, not just *ANY* new newsreader. It's not like if a hobo came up with a CD to me and said there was a news reader on it I would pay him money to get it. If I am to invest money in something I want to be sure that I am getting my money's worth, as would most people I gather. > Other people have not only demonstrated otherwise, but have done so with > the understanding that starting from square one means that Signal would > not come out of the door fully functional on day one. Uh, I didn't mean you hadn't done any development, but you're here because you want financial support for developing a software product, are you not? No one that is currently voting "no" with their wallet with regards to your project will be surprised if it doesn't become a product, you know. -- Sandman[.net]

For your reference, records indicate that Sandman <mr@sandman.net> wrote: > Then I guess Signal is not to be, then? I mean, it's not much harder than > that. If you want $20k for developing it and people aren't willing to pay > you that, then you won't develop it, problem solved, right? Right. There’s still plenty of time for other people to hear about it and show interest. I’m also going to add a perk next week that might get some takers. Otherwise, yeah, this is how the sausage gets made. Normally the decision is made behind closed doors, so consider this your peek into why developers aren’t flocking to create Usenet apps on the Mac (or iOS). > >> Huh? I very much want a new newsreader. > > > > No, you don’t. > > Yes, I do. Stop lying about what I want or do not want. I’m looking at the evidence, not what you’re self-reporting. You don’t seem to be paying anyone to develop custom software for you, and you don’t seem to be willing to pool in with other people to get semi-custom development done, and you don’t seem to be willing to use an existing commercial product. I’m at a loss trying to determine what sort of market you *do* represent. > > > You say you do, but when push comes to shove you seem unwilling to offer > > up even $10 to demonstrate how “very much” you want it. > > Huh? I responded to his OP with a link to a blog post I had written earlier about features I want in Unison, with the intention that those ideas might help him with feedback on his project. I later also said that I would have no problem paying for a good news reader. He has since lied about my motivations and made ridiculous claims about me not "wanting" a new news reader, in spite of me saying exactly that, based on the fact that I won't put down money beforehand on HIS future news client. > Then accuse him of whining! What would satisfy you, that he agree to put > his tail between his legs and slink off? I would be satisified if he came here asking for advice, features and ideas for his project, and not lie about those of us that won't pay him today for what he might release tomorrow. I have no problem with him wanting to fund his project, nor do I consider it a bad idea. I'm just not one of those that would be interested in funding it. If the end result is any good, I might pay for it. If there never is an end result because he couldn't get proper fudning, that's ok with me as well. -- Sandman[.net]

OK, Mr. Very Literal when it suits you, you implied that he was here
whining often and I was making a point which you continue to miss or
pretend to miss (I prefer the former, the latter would require more
self awareness). That it is not whining he does and his objections and
retorts are in response to not very fair or reasonable posts from some
of you.

If a post is not positive and supportive, it could be neutral rather
than negative. I would not describe a welt of posts that have caused
him to respond to the extent that you call whining as neutral. Guess
what's left? That's it, Watson, negative.

You had a number of criteria for what would satisfy you besides him
"lying", I was focussed on that. I will not go into this charge of
lying though it seems hardly fair. Perhaps I should remind you,
something that a lot of upset people seem to ignore, that lying almost
always means deliberately saying things you know are false.

Yea? Well, he (Doc) brought it all upon himself.
You need not believe me - go back and read it yourself,
especially the first (POP3 vs. IMAP) thread.
Here, let me help you out -
Doc's first art is here -
<droleary-0CDB8C.10554302052014@news.eternal-september.org>
My followup -
<lk0ibq$36o$1@reader2.panix.com>
The thread rambles on, but these are just mine and his -

<droleary-5FB83B.11434204052014@news.eternal-september.org>
<lk8t1r$q5o$1@reader2.panix.com>
And here's where Doc really starts to fall apart -

Et cetera.
NB Doc was still using MT-NewsWatcher/3.5.2 here.

How common is it for people in usenet meeting each other? Surprisingly, it's more common than you think. There's a gang in alt.usenet.kooks who travel great distances to get together with each other, for some bizarre reason; I can't imagine that any of them are very good company. The people from the old folklore.urban group apparently all moved into a yurt together. All this began somewhat in that vein (using Usenet as a social network ala
Facebook), and even though he wasn't asking for it, he got some advice (get
the IETF to support the increased consumption of resources), but he doesn't
seem interested in doing that.
As for funding, I see two possibilities. Usenet as a social network is best
handled with venture capital. Make a business plan, get a team of engineers
together, and bang it out, quickly. If it's just another newsreader, any
experienced Usenet user who knows programming (and what he wants) should be
able to get that roughed out in his spare time, perhaps with the help of
some users/beta testers/other programmers, and then look for funding (what
the author of MailMate did - that campaign included a user agent that was
already working quite well).

Because the only purpose for social media to exist is the enrichment of some venture capitalists looking for the next Facebook or Twitter, whereby Big Info can capture yet more information about us so that we can be more efficiently exploited by supply siders. Great idea! That way we can use the tens of millions of dollars that US taxpayers put into the development of the Internet to benefit a tiny part of the private sector even more efficently instead of primarily benefitting the taxpayers. > If it's just another newsreader, any experienced Usenet user who knows > programming (and what he wants) should be able to get that roughed out > in his spare time, perhaps with the help of some users/beta > testers/other programmers, and then look for funding (what the author > of MailMate did - that campaign included a user agent that was already > working quite well). For somone like Doc, with no money, it is a great idea. The principals
of FB, Twitter, et al., are now quite wealthy. And Big Info is going to
get your data, no matter what. Except maybe in the EU. Probably there,
too.
By the way, in case you missed it (or have just plain forgotten), social
media was Doc's idea, not mine. I argued strongly against it.

Huh?
Your train of thought has dereailed.

I'm already done, and have been for 20 years now. Time flies!
MailMate, by the way, is progressing nicely, and the support it's being
given is 100% first class in every possible way. Well worth the US$50.

Well worth the > US$50. For you, perhaps. Looking at their website, MailMate has nothing unique that I want and certainly nothing for which I'd pay such an exorbitant price.
