That's no evidence > for the absolute claim you just made. I made no absolute claim. Since you can’t name those 30 projects, or otherwise provide support for the assertion that you “very much want” something, it is safe to assume no evidence will be forthcoming and that, in fact, your claim is false. You sound too much like a child who is throwing a tantrum because they can’t have what they want and refuses to listen to anything their parents request they do in order to show their sincerity. You’re not mowing my lawn, so why exactly do you expect to be getting something from me? In the absence of evidence in your favor, I have to just hope you’ll be satisfied by what you get from one of those 30 projects you *did* deem worthy enough of your support. That’s a reality I can live with. > > not what you’re self-reporting. You don’t seem to be paying anyone to > > develop custom software for you > > On what information do you base this claim? It’s not a claim; the “seem” bit should be a giveaway. You say you want things, but you offer no reason to believe your wants are reflected in reality. If you *are* paying someone to develop a Usenet client for you, now is the time to mention it. If for no other reason than it seems like it would be a conflict of interest and/or otherwise shade your participation in this thread. > What is it that I said that > ever gave you the idea that I don't pay people to develop custom software > for me? The burden is not on me to prove a negative. If you have evidence that you do, present it. Welcome to science. > Because I know it's blatantly false, and as far as I know, I > haven't said anything that points to the contrary. You're becoming an > arrogant asshole the more I speak with you. What's the point with this? I really don’t know why you chose to go down this rabbit hole. Perhaps I have shown you something about yourself that you don’t like and, rather than change to be a better person, you instead see fit to attack me further. > > and you don’t seem to be willing to pool in with other people to get > > semi-custom development done > > You mean, other than the many other kickstarter projects I've hlped fund, > which I've been talking about? You mean apart from those? You have a > preconcieved notion about me and/or other and are just ignoring reality to > make it fit. You do do quite a bit of talking, but I’d really prefer it if you got to the point. I mean, regardless of your unsubstantiated generosity otherwise, you don’t deem this project worth your while. I get it; I got it a long time ago. What do you expect me to do for you in return for that lack of support? > > I’m at a loss trying to determine what sort of market you *do* represent. > > Mostly it's the upscale refined software market. I use freeware/oss > software if it makes sense, or if it's the best for the job, but I use > professional commercial software when it serves my needs best. Well, then, Unison already exists for you. And you say you already own it, but are using slrn for whatever reason. If you want a Usenet app that is *more* “upscale” than Unison and all you’re willing to do is sit on your ass and wait to be satisfied, I cannot help you. Simple as that. > Well, Unison is $30, and it's pretty crap. For a decent news client, I > would have no problem paying $60 or even $100. Quality software deserves a > good price. Crap software, not so much. Forgive the software developers of the world for seeing what you’ve written here and thinking you might just not be good for that. Nothing personal, mind you, its just that there are a *lot* of people who make such claims and, when push comes to shove, don’t come through in the end. That’s why newsreaders on the Mac tend not to stick around. If you won’t drop $10 into escrow today, I don’t see why I should bust my hump for the mere *chance* that you’ll part with $100 in 6 months. You also need to realize how little that $100 represents when it comes to developing software as custom as you apparently need it to be to even consider paying for it. If you take in on yourself to organize 1000 people to agree on what the app should do, you *might* end up getting what you want. My proposal is much more modest than that, and yet some people still complain about the price tag. > > Consider that vote duly counted. Just don’t be surprised by the outcome. > > How could I be? If I am voting "no" with my wallet and the product isn't > being made, the outcome would be just in line with my vote, wouldn't it? I > mean, I would much sooner be surprised if it WAS developed, right? That’s what a rational person would expect. But, then, a rational person would likely choose to take some positive action if they “very much want” something. Thus the (seeming) potential for surprise on your part. > > No, I’m trying to determine if the users, such as you, who continually say > > they want a new newsreader actually are interested in sufficient numbers > > to cover the costs of the necessary development. No. Like I said, this is how the sausage gets made. I’m being as straightforward as I would be behind any closed door consultation that I would have with any other potential client. If the client chooses to instead go with the company that promises unrealistic things with a sweet smile and a glad hand, I’m likely better off not having that client. I want a project to realistically succeed. I’ve made the case as best as I could. If you can do better, I wish you the best of luck. > I keep coming back to the image of a beggar that calls everyone walking by > an asshole if they won't put a dime in the hat. Quite the opposite. A primary reason I want the end product to be free is that I realize that not everyone (hell, *most* people) will do everything they can to not pay for things. I’m no exception, either. :-) But the reality is that software does not come from nothing, so we all have to collectively figure out how to get things done. I’ve made my proposal. Counter it with your own, or otherwise do more to be helpful to my aims. > > Based on all the hemming and hawing they do, it sure seems like they’re > > surprised that they can’t get a free lunch anymore. > > They *CAN* get a free lunch. There are free news clients available for > them. Thunderbird is a popular one. A bit buggy, but still a free lunch. What you call lunch most Mac users seem to call tree bark. Or, as the saying goes, it’s free only if your time is worthless. Realize even you are quite an exception; most people aren’t going to take the time to bother with slrn. Hell, I used slrn as my last terminal newsreader and even *I* found my time better spent throwing myself into writing Signal rather than going back to slrn. I’m still looking forward to the day when I see any of those “free lunch” newsreader developers in here eager to support the needs of Mac users… -- dn ƃuᴉʞool ǝɹɐ sƃuᴉɥʇ

"Evidence" meaning tossing some money at you, eh?

Their programs already run well on Macs.

WHy not just answer the question? > You say you want things, but you offer no reason to believe your wants > are reflected in reality. No one has requested that I should provide a "reality reflection" of my desires. There has been no need for me to "reflect" anything. My very first post in this thread was to a blog post I had written about the short comings of Unison back when Mavericks was released. It was crystal clear from that blog post that I had a great desire for a good news client, that I was willing to pay for it, and I had some very specific desires for how it should work. May be, or not. You need a public relations person, or education.
Expecting anyone to discover what you're doing by finding it amidst
these garbage-littered Usenet threads is doomed to failure.
> I want *genuine* funding.
See above. Then compare the number of people reading your couple
of threads in this group with the total number of Usenet users.
As for your sentiments about those "who don't actually care or intend
to actually use Usenet," what happened to your vision of turning it it

It's a subset of a subset of all the mac Usenet users out there. When the creator of Thoth did one of his attempts to get interest in a new version, I completely missed it because I ignored computer newsgroups. I was too busy reading a dozen others every day. As for not being asked to be on podcasts and such, you can't be asked if they haven't heard of you. You have to go to them. Getting a mention on one RSS feed could have made all the difference. Nobody is keeping you from mentioning Signal to your friends on Facebook or Twitter or (if you can imagine it) in real life. The purpose is not *just* to fund Signal, after all, but to bring *people* back to Usenet. > As for not being asked to be on podcasts and such, you can't be asked > if they haven't heard of you. You have to go to them. No. I refuse to accept a world where what passes for news is just some lazily gathered press releases. It is *their* job to find out things to report on. It’s not like I’m hiding. If you think there is are some podcasts that *should* be talking about this, why don’t you ask *them* when they’re going to cover it? > Getting a mention > on one RSS feed could have made all the difference. It could, but probably not. I have gone the PR route before. The results were not sufficient for me to keep throwing money at it. Carpet bombing is no longer a worthwhile tactic; there are just too many people competing for eyeballs these days. Keep in mind, too, that referrals are tracked by Indiegogo, so if someone *did* make a difference, the evidence would be clear. Plus they’d get perk bonuses. All the pieces are in place so, again, it seems to me that you really have to investigate the motives of the people who are running the feeds you’re reading. > Again, I almost > think part of you is trying to talk yourself out of this project by not > doing anything to help it succeed. I mean, right? Other than busting my hump actually writing this software, and talking about everywhere I can without resorting to spam, why don’t I have some skin in the game like a PR push? I know you’re trying to be helpful, but I hope you can see that directing attention outward would be a lot more productive than directing it inward. So, really, I’d ask you, if you don’t want to contact them yourself, tell me *which* sites/podcasts you know of that would be particularly receptive to this sort of thing. Ones that don’t see Usenet as competition for their own forums, or wouldn’t see Signal as just another random crowdfunding project. That’d be worthwhile to pursue, but just a blanket “do more” is not an action plan I can use. -- dn ƃuᴉʞool ǝɹɐ sƃuᴉɥʇ

I don't know about receptive, but as for making people aware,
Daring Fireball would be my first suggestion. If you've got
something good to offer, I'd expect he'd say so. There are
several other similar, but probably not as widely read, sites
that would also help let everyone know what's up. I'd have

Yeah, but Doc seems to want this to fail (or only succeed within his narrow parameters, at least - so pretty much the same thing: guaranteed failure). Doing even free PR that would have taken less time than his arguments here on Usenet is apparently out of the question. I mean for goodness's sake, how hard is it to spend a few minutes composing an attractive PR release, and emailing that to the various easily obtainable (they want to receive them, so they don't hide 'em IME!) PR email addresses for Mac news sites? -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I don’t understand why you persist with the notion that not being funded equates to failure. What I’m doing is a very deliberate, larger survey to assess the current and (potential) future state of the Usenet community. If you think my end goal is nothing more than getting $20K, you’re way off the mark. > Doing even free PR that would have taken less time than his > arguments here on Usenet is apparently out of the question. No, it is *completely* in question. Have you come to a different answer than me? Then *do* something about it. If you really want a new newsreader *and* you think the investment in a PR campaign is so minimal, pick up that ball and run with it. I have already stated that I’d be open to giving anyone who can effectively raise funds *everything* in excess of Signal’s $20K goal. Just tell me your terms in advance so I can make it clear to everyone involved what you want to take as your cut. Keep in mind, though, that some people here have expressed an opinion the project itself is worth an order of magnitude less, so I can’t imagine they’d be all that kind to anyone expecting too much just for doing the fund raising. Myself, I’m willing to let you set your own value for your participation. > I mean for > goodness's sake, how hard is it to spend a few minutes composing an > attractive PR release, and emailing that to the various easily > obtainable (they want to receive them, so they don't hide 'em IME!) PR > email addresses for Mac news sites? As I said, I have done the blanket PR thing before and, despite it being not “hard”, the results still didn’t make the effort worthwhile in my opinion. If your opinion differs, act on it. Just $1000 through referrals and you can demand your graphical thread view. Regarding Daring Fireball, I’ve sent John Gruber a few comments in the past and never gotten a positive response. Nothing about how he runs his site seems receptive to the promotion of things he does have some personal stake in. Nothing wrong with that, it is his site after all, but that bias guides my expectation and actions when it comes to bothering him about something like Signal. If you want to try bending his ear, you’re free to do that. The results will be on display for all to see. -- dn ƃuᴉʞool ǝɹɐ sƃuᴉɥʇ

Obviously, it's the only thing that matters to *him*. You're doing nothing wrong as far as I'm concerned. Don't let the haters discourage your efforts. This thread passed the useful mark ages ago. All that is left is a bunch of bickering about irrelevant bullshit. I'm about to start killing it, personally. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

Until I get around to implementing filters, I can only choose to ignore the worst offenders. So far it’s not so bad; even the volume of trolls and spam on Usenet has dramatically decreased. -- dn ƃuᴉʞool ǝɹɐ sƃuᴉɥʇ

I don't understand why you're equating a suggestion about promotion
as a statement about not being funded.

Large, as long as it's confined to this hierarchy, it is not.

Hmm. I have.

Hmm, again. He doesn't read that way to me.

I'm left uncertain as to what his motivations actually are. Not that I personally give a damn how he values his time, beyond finding this thread increasingly difficult to follow rationally. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
