lynx news:'lmvire$u2h$1@dont-email.me' works.

curl is a tool to transfer data from or to a server, using one of the
supported protocols (DICT, FILE, FTP, FTPS, GOPHER, HTTP, HTTPS, IMAP,
IMAPS, LDAP, LDAPS, POP3, POP3S, RTMP, RTSP, SCP, SFTP, SMTP, SMTPS,
TELNET and TFTP).

Do you see news or nntp in the above list? I didn't think so.

It's a piece of cake with, for example, perl (794 bytes in 56 lines),
though.

Oh, that is very easy to imagine being very very useful.

because it's proper design.

why wouldn't anyone want to do that?

if you have the message id you can easily get the message, and for
binaries this could be quite powerful.

because nobody wrote a reusable nntp module for it to use.

56 lines of perl is not a piece of cake

On this feature, I haven’t written any direct URL handler into my
NNTP.framework just yet, but here is what it’d look like to accomplish
it with the current API:

	// Instead of trying all configured servers, we'll single out my existing ES configuration for this example.
	NSString	*searchString = @"eternal-september";
	NSPredicate	*searchPredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat: @"url.host contains[c] %@", searchString, searchString];
	NNTPServer	*server = [[[NNTPServer allServers] filteredArrayUsingPredicate: searchPredicate] lastObject];

	// Set up a stub article from the URL and fetch it from the server.
	NSURL		*newsURL = [NSURL URLWithString: @"news:lmvire$u2h$1@dont-email.me"];
	NNTPArticle *article = [NNTPArticle new];

	article.identifier = [NSString stringWithFormat: @"<%@>", newsURL.resourceSpecifier];
	[article fetchFullArticleUsingServer: server];

	NSLog(@"text body: %@", article.bodyString);

I’m not even sure how I could add 50 lines to that. I'd like to see that
Perl version.

Add input validation, error handling, and make it

So you say, but I’m not seeing the code. I showed you mine. Now you
show me yours. Otherwise, I have to think you’re just making up stuff.
I want to see you do what you claim with 794 bytes in 56 lines.

I made no claims regarding my code. I just posted it. As you now
realize, it is 50 lines shorter than your code, yet quite close in
character count. That makes your claims quite extraordinary. It is
not “dwelling”, but rather curiosity regarding how your code fills out
the extra 50 lines with all the extra features you *say* it has while
at the same time being so compact.

> I inadvertantly omitted formatting to make it easily readable.

Again, so you say, but you show nothing. Does it also hook into the
Mac Keychain to get your credentials for access? I mean, mine does that
and, in fact, many more things behind the scenes, but it’s really beyond
the scope of the initial discussion.

> > So you say, but I'm not seeing the code. I showed you mine.

You had access enough to it to presumably push it through wc. Is it not
open source, then? Simply say it isn’t yours if it isn’t, or if you can’t
otherwise post similar code of your own. I can, so I did. Simple as that.

You made what I see as an extraordinary claim. If you can’t back it up,
the only one who comes off looking foolish is you.

Funny. I ask people to put $10 towards a newsreader that can be open
sourced forever and I’m called greedy. You expect me to spend the same
amount for just a month’s access to 56 lines of (apparently) closed code,
and *that’s* an education.

> Here's a bonus example of how useful, in the hands of a decent

Guess what, Billy: I know Perl, too. I’m guessing that you special, super-
secret script mainly uses Net::NNTP and maybe some other CPAN pieces to
do its heavy lifting. Ands odds are pretty good that it’s also an ugly mess
if it actually does everything you say it does.

So either back up your claim or retract it, or I’m done with you.

Not by my reading of what you're saying in this group. You say you know

So. Anything not written by you is an "ugly mess?" Har.

Well, I've got some news for you. Based on how you've held forth in this

the author of that script is who needs to be educated.

it's an interesting script, but as is typical, it's not very well
designed, not well tested and with substantial limitations and missing
functionality.

it doesn't support article number ranges, user authentication, posting,
binary encoding and decoding, text search for articles, alternate news
servers without editing (and they don't always work if you do) and even
requires quotes around message ids.

also, article numbers are dependent on which server is used, so that's
not a good way to retrieve posts. it's basically a single server hack.

and since you can't be bothered to post the script, here it is:

#!/usr/local/bin/perl

$|=1;

use Net::NNTP;

$srvr1=new Net::NNTP("news.panix.com");

die "Could not access news server" if !defined($srvr1);

if ( $#ARGV == -1 )
{
  print "Syntax - $0 group artnum\n";
  print "     or  $0 group:artnum\n";
  print "     or  $0 '<msgid>'\n";
  exit;
}

while ( $#ARGV >= 0 )
{
  $_=shift @ARGV;
  if (/:/)
  {
    ($grp,$art)=split(/:/,$_,2);
  }
  elsif (/^</)
  {
    $grp="";
    $art=$_;
  }
  else
  {
    $grp=$_;
    $art=shift @ARGV;
  }

  if ($grp)
  {
    $ingrp=$srvr1->group($grp);
    if (!defined($ingrp))
    {
      print "No such group: $grp\n";
      exit;
    }
  }

  $msg=$srvr1->article($art);
  if (!defined($msg))
  {
    print "No such article: " . ($grp?"$grp:":"") . $art . "\n";
  }
  else
  {
    print join("",@{ $msg} );

there are no distribution restrictions, no license agreement for its

Panix doesn't get many new users. Those it does get are listed
automatically via a script that posts to a local newsgroup.

So, it occurred to me to take a look, and see who showed up
around the time I mentioned the perl script referenced above.

There's only one that even comes remotely close -

Login Name: lloydalvarez Full Name: lloydalvarez

His account was created at this time (got to love Unix, it's a
snoop's paradise) -

drwx------   4 lloydalvarez  users  4096 Jun  9 16:05 lloydalvarez

  Hmm.. Here it is June 15th, and the account has not been used since.

  Odd, eh?

Mr (can't call him Ms any more, heh) nospam has mentioned working
on Photoshop plugins. Here one can see quite a bit of that sort of
activity -

https://www.google.com/search?q=lloyd+alvarez+photoshop

The IP address above belongs to The Mill - a UK visual effects
house...

http://www.themill.com

...that also has facilities in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago,
which fits with some other things this particular nospam has posted.

So... I think I'm looking at a strong possibility I've got the
right guy.

I'll conclude with mentioning that Panix is a business, and part
of the way they earn money is by providing things not available
elsewhere -- including things their users contribute. I can not
post what they've directly said about that for the same reason I
could not disclose the contents of the perl script. If "nospam"
cares to read it, it's in the panix.policy newsgroup.

nonsense.

their rules are readable by anyone:
<http://www.panix.com/general/rules.html>

there's nothing there about any restrictions on distributing publicly
accessible information, nor could there be. it's public!

if the secret author who won't even put his name in the file wanted to
restrict its distribution somehow, then he should have stated what
those restrictions are in the file itself so that readers would be
aware of his wishes, and he didn't.

not only does panix not care about distributing it, but neither does
the author!

you're blowing smoke and you're also in violation of rule #7.

And few people care. There are a number of Mac solutions - their names
have been bandied about and they all do the essential things that usenet
clients must do.

If the world were clammoring for a perfect, "first-class" usenet client

The wing-nut here is he who is trying to raise cash up front for
something with marginal additional benefit v. what is in the market.
Satisfying the needs for things like "curl on the command line to fetch
news" is not something very many people will actually use to yabber away
on usenet.

As to filtering, filter me. I don't care. At all.

If you go to Google Groups and look up this group you'll see that there
has been little impediment to Mac users yabbering away for a long time
with a variety of usenet clients.

Seems accurate to me. There is not a single application for the Mac that
I would consider even a passable USENET client. The best GUI option is
ThunderBird, which is not a *Mac* application. There are CLI options,
but again those are not *Mac* applications.
