I’ve organized thinks specifically to put network effects to the test. It is meaningless for me to over-promote my own efforts. I’m just the guy doing the development; it is up to the *community* to decide whether or not this app is something they want for themselves. That’s why I have your referrals apply towards your perks. The whole *point* is to give Usenet a shot in the arm as a social network, and that inherently means people getting each other back to using it instead of (or in addition to) Twitter and Facebook and the like. > Similar to an actor who doesn't > want to take a role (but doesn't want to burn bridges) who asks for a > huge paycheck. Anyone who thinks $20K is a big paycheck for the work involved really doesn’t understand software development. Well, that risk is there even with material and tooling costs.
Take, for instance, AdTrap. The result works fairly well, but
when they said it even catches adverts in videos, what they
didn't go on to say was it makes you wait for the same length
of time as if you were actually seeing them.

Interesting widget. I know when I watch a television program via a web page, I'm stuck waiting for adverts to go by (which I don't mind per se). If that stream is "real time" (ish) on the source end, then the widget would have no choice but to wait. Since, when those ads pass you have no control over them (FF, REW, or even PAUSE - which could be handy) I assume there is a real time control on the source end. -- I was born a 1%er - I'm just more equal than the rest.

While I can't rule the latter part out, since I don't know Doc personally, it's a risk I am willing to take. However, your claim that the "shareware/donationware system has worked for many people... for decades" is bullshit. It works great for people who want to get software for free; it works badly for people writing software who need to make a living. A fraction of the people who download it pay for it, like 1-10 out of 1000. And those 900-999 want their unpaid-for software maintained and updated. I don't blame Doc for a second for wanting to see the money up front before he starts committing hours to development. Software developed in people's spare time for free progresses very slowly because it necessarily takes a back seat to other things. > Besides which, since it appears to be a hobby / spare time thing, it's > not like he's actually making a living from it, so this "economic > reality" nonsense is just a load of BS to excuse his own greediness. Software developed in > people's spare time for free progresses very slowly because it > necessarily takes a back seat to other things. It's patronage pure and simple. That's all Kickstarter and all these crowd funding things really are. They aren't pre-orders, they aren't investements. They are you, supporting the creator, possibly with some tangable benifit or product for you at the end. And thankfully, with today's technology we have been able to streamline the process. I've kickstarted a number of projects, most successful, some less so. In any case, I knew what I was getting into when I "donated" my money to the projects. I can get behind not wanting to spend your money in such a way. It's your money, you can and should do as you please. But these personal attacks being slung about, WOW. Creator wants to do a print run of a book, but needs to raise a few thousand to cover printing costs first, so uses Kickstarter to make sure there's demand for 2000 copies and get the money up front. What I end up getting usually equals in value the amount I've spent. There are exceptions, such as when I funded the completion of the Pink Five fan film, but that's rare for me. Now, Patreon, from which I make a bit of money for my writing, IS pure patronage. -- Chris Mack "If we show any weakness, the monsters will get cocky!" I've done this with several board games, practically they are pre-orders. They get a solid count of what to produce, and the funding to do it. But honestly, it really is micro-patronage. There's no meaniful recourse if the project never comes to completion. Given that, I think prefunding Signal in this manner is the perfect way to get it made. In the case of signal where the developer is trying to raise the money to cover his costs of developing the application so then it can be released free of charge to everyone, patronage. We are financially encouraging the developer to practice his art.

Care to be specific, and say exactly which ones these are?
