During the WWDC keynote, I believe Tim Cook mentioned they had an 80
million macintosh installed base. (please correct me if wrong).

This compares to over 500 million IOS devices. (and would put into
perspective the sales/profit potential of IOS devices vs OS-X ones and
hence development budgets. Looks to me like OS-X is now riding on the
IOS' coat-tails, while initially it was the other way around.

When you compare this to the 1980s when the CEO of Digital stated there
was no need for personal computers, 50 million is a huge number. But I
am curious on how it compares with today's total installed base ?

From a worldwide perspective, I am surprised it is as low as 50 million.
In meetings I go to, I now notice those few who don't have a laptop with
the ubiquitous lighted Apple logo on them. I would have expected the
installed based to be much higher.

We know that Apple's new sales market share sites somewhere between 6
and 10% or perhaps higher by now since Macs sales still grow whereas PC
sales go down.

However, how does the Mac installed base compared to the PC installed
base ? Is it roughly the same as the sales market share, or is there a
vast difference ?

Well there must be a vast difference with Windows PCs for one massive
reason ... which is that almost ALL corporate business got sucked into
the PC vortex decades ago and were unable to esscape.

I would eb interested to know the comparative numbers LEAVING OUT all
corporate and nusiness machines.

That doesn't necessarily follow. Part of the reason for PC sales going
down is the "financial crisis" and people, especially businesses,
simply keeping their computers longer.

That depends on which set of inaccurate statistics you want to stupidly
believe. There's no real way to get an actual accurate number.

Many of the "market share" statistics are obtained by using web-user
statistics, but what about people who don't use the internet?

Other statistics come from current sales data, but what about people
who are still using "obsolete" computers (like me) or seconds-hand
computers?

Other statistics come from manufacturing, but what about the computers
that fail and are returned for replacement and those that are never
sold?

More or less what people have been saying the Mac market "is" for the
last few years.

Not esp. common in some meetings. Aerospace and defense is still
Windows ruled. Other businesses seem more open to Macs.

Replacement sales. The last of the PowerPC's are being replaced (even
the vet's office finally upgraded to intel based systems recently -
maybe they were waiting for s/w updates...); and the early flight intels
are being replaced now as well

Slowly.

Franky, most PC's and Macs have ample power for what most people do.
And that was in 2005. If it ain't broke...

The Google article on most used OS' is not a bad place to begin. It may
not be "right" but it's probably close in proportions. Note that
"Linux" in there is all those "Desktop" Linux' that access the web in a
casual manner. Not all those embedded systems, servers hidden away and
so on.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#Desktop_and_laptop_computers

By that reckoning, there are just about 1 B Windows machines that are
using the web v. 80 M OS X that are assumed to be using the web.

But by this article, the Win PC number is about 1.5B (see bottom).

As to sales share/market share/installed share I'll let you explore on
your own.

Ok, so basically 8% of installed base, which more or less matches (in
order of magnitude) the sales figures.

So I guess, as I have never been accused of being normal, I must
associate with people of similar standing who also use Macs. But this
ranges from academics to lawyers.

Why did you switch to 50 million from 80 million?

Since very few PC manufacturers actually tell you how many machines
they've sold, it's a little hard to say.

But if you go here:

<http://barefigur.es/apple/>

You can see that the 80 million figure looks pretty reasonable.

No. Over 800 million iOS devices and over 500 million iPhones.

> From a worldwide perspective, I am surprised it is as low as 50 million.

80 Million.

It doens’t.

A vast difference. how many PCs are there? well, no one really knows,
but is it a billion? Yeah, almost certainly. Is it two billion? Maybe.
No one is counting "number of PCs" though, so numbers are a guess.

Many "PCs" are cash registers, ATM machines, and other similar devices.
Many PCs are servers running some linux/bsd variant and sitting in
server colos.
