Apple apparently heard you, because in a later update, they added the
ability to increase contrast.

Apparently they had nothing better to do. Personally, I don't make a
habit of staring at UI elements when I use my computer. I typically have
a certain task I want to accomplish, and I focus on that. As long as Mac
OS allows me to get stuff done easily, I really couldn't care less
whether the perspective of some stupid UI element is slightly off.

I’ve always kept my dock on the right side because:

1. Old NeXT habits die hard
2. My monitor has way more horizontal space than vertical

so flat is already what I get. In general, I’ve never been a fan of fake
3D or glare, or questionable use of transparency, so Yosemite is looking like
a bit of a mixed bag for me.

I've tried the dock on the side, and it’s OK on the laptop right until I
connect a second display. It's not worth moving the dock given how much
I use it (or don’t use it, rather) so it lives on the bottom.

I never minded the glass dock, but I also don't much care one way or the
other. It demos well, I'll give it that.

I get 30 Mbps (reliably) and 10 Mbps (reliably) from here to everywhere
in the northeast and to Vancouver. To LA I get about 25 and 8.

It's the same free 5GB we have always had, it seems the difference is
the restoration of some stuff such as file sharing which we lost when
iDisc and mobileme went away. Also, Apple seems to have woken up to the
fact they were not competitive price wise.

Concurrency? (not sure that was the name) but being able to move from
phone to computer to iPad seamlessly and even make calls or send SMS from
other devices? Oh yeah.

Widgets into Notification Center? Sounds great.

I like the new features in Safari and I am pleasantly surprised that RSS
is back.

Wow a post that wasn't about the name. I'm impressed.

I saw lots of interesting stuff—as always.

It seems that between the “Notifications” and the Dashboard and it’s
widgets they’re going to cobble together ONE thing that will might
really be useful: A quick way to see the x number of things that are
interesting to *the user* on an immediate basis.

Spotlight, over many a year, cobbled together more effectively with the
app launcher, seems to be maturing to a really usable item.

Mail Drop looks functional. We’ve been using Air Drop around the house
here, the wife and I, and the ability for her to use it, as a bona fide
iPad fan, in conjunction with her Mac looks great.

Mark-Up addresses something all of us have wanted: writing on any/all
image type documents.

They seem to have taken off the gloves in the browser competition with
Safari’s recent expansion. Under the hood they have really expanded it
dramatically--we're told. The idea of being able to stream NetFlix
directly through the browser without using whatever MS software is
currently in use sounds like an addition of significant refinement.

HealthKit, though clearly in its infancy, directs itself to real-world
solutions to real-world problems. I’m definitely for it’s expansion
and refinement.

I found the cut-away shots the the audience interesting. It looked like
a high-school assembly. I know they’re pimping the “youth” and “up to
date” aspect of all things Apple, but still doing it well.

The idea of merging iPhone, iPad and iMac into one large multi-headed
Hydra (or is it Medusa?), is a brilliant way to move iPhone or iPad
users into Mac users, but if they can really make it seamless—god bless
them!

I was surprised when they showed the Android users adaptation to the
current OS: only 9% are using the newest software, and over 40% (?) are
stuck in software that is over 4 years old. Similarly the stats for
using the newest version of Windows, tells you something about how
eager to adapt the other companies’ users are: They’re not. On the
other hand moving to the newest software for the iPhone/iPad/iMac is
becoming less frightening all the time. And expense? Free is always
the best number to move the intransigent…

Spotlight has been very useable already, adding the 'net to it just
makes it much more sweet. That's one of the things I like with Windows
8/8.1 too, global search easily done.

Amen!! I didn't use it because the Mac had been left out of the mix.

I thought about that too. When home I can put the iphone on a charger
wherever and just use my iPad or Mac to make and receive calls. And
with the new 'instant hotspot', why would one need to buy an iPad with
cell support? It seems this is all similar to what is being done in
many cars these days. My Buick has bluetooth to the iPhone and it is
seamless and simple.

Apple has almost always been much better about OS upgrades along the
way, as well as integrating all things Apple to interact with each
other. Next thing you'll know is that you'll be able to make and
receive phone calls from your apple TV!! :)

it all depends on what the carrier charges for the hotspot. I have my
iPad and iPhone on different carriers so that if I'm in an area where
one doesn't have a usable connection and the other does, I'm still
connected.

I got the impression from the keynote that the hotspot was all done by
the phone and the carrier isn't involved. I mean they do the same
thing in my Buick now via bluetooth, can't see why it wouldn't work the
same.

Apple included the ability of a carrier (Aka: AT&T) to disable tethering
alltogether (when it was not ready for it) and then to sell tethering
separatly at a premium as the connection is established to different APN
name allowing AT&T to know this is tethering data.

However, technically, a disabled tethering would not require disabling
of wi-fi hotspot since the wi-fi hotspot is beween local machines.
(tethering is what links it to the HSPA/LTE link with carrier).

There isn't much clarity on how voice will be billed with LTE. Will it
be billed by the minute , UBB free, or will voice be free but as data ?

I would prefer spotlight be limited to "fine file NAME". I personally do
not care about finding stuff on the internet.

iF i am looking for a recently downloaded submission from BelL Canada, I
want to be able to find it on the hard drive.

I wish they would then let me right click to choose the app to open it.

If spotlight will return all sorts of useless drivel from the internet,
it looses usefulness.

Having s mall buttons in the spotlight input field might be able to
restrict the search.

I cannot understand why Apple insists on claiming translucency is so
great. All it does is readuces readability of test, and to counter it,
you have to set yoru backdrop to drap blue or black. (which defeats the
whole point of having a background).

Yep, me too. I want Finder to find a file on my computer. When I want
to find something on the Internet I'll use the web browser's search
feature as it was deisnged to do. :-\

It's not as if it's even new ... Sherlock under Mac OS 9 (and earlier
versions of Mac OS X) was able to search various locations and use
plug-ins to add more, such as Amazon.

Ives has obviously a fetish about stupid translucency ... we saw it in
the first iMac and now he's interferring with the software, it's
becoming a hideous nuisance (the translucent menubar was bad enough).

I assume you can turn that off; that is, you can limit your Spotlight
searches in myriad ways, just like now.

1. I'll be that the find field in Finder windows won't search the
internet, so there's that.

2. I'll also bet that "filename:<filenamesnippet>" will work in the new
Spotlight search just the way it works now.

It's like the Return of Sherlock: Spotlock or Sherlight. No thanks; I
don't want web page hits cluttering up my search for a file (and I don't
want the further erosion of privacy that is bound to come with this).

I wish that Spotlight in Mavericks would tell me where the damn file is
rather than letting me just quick-look at it or open it. I usually want
to know what folder I lost something in.

You want Find Any File.

http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

| Find Any File is a program for Mac OS X that lets you search for files
| on your disks.
|
| Contrary to Spotlight, it does not use a database but instead uses the
| file system driver's fast search operations, where available. This lets
| you search for file properties such as name, dates, size, etc., but not
| for file content (use Spotlight or EasyFind for that).
|
| Find Any File can find files that Spotlight doesn't, e.g. those inside
| bundles and packages and in inside folders that are usually excluded
| from Spotlight search.
|
| Finally, it is quite fast. A search only takes a few seconds on an
| internal hard disk or SSD. Try for yourself!

And, it can also seach with root permission.

That's brain-dead easy already: Just hold down the Command key while
clicking a file in the search results. ; )
