#59357 — Windows 7?

FromErikRS <mac-dane@is.invalid>

SubjectWindows 7?
Message-ID<ll2fio$van$1@solani.org>
Sadly I'll need to have a Windows 7 Home Ultimate installation on my
MacPro1.1 Xeon Quad 4x3,0ghz (prod. Summer 07), but infact I'm a bit
confused which version to choose or not. - It will be installed as a
virtual machine using Paralles Desktop 6.x which I already have bought.
Some say 32bits, some 64bits...

Which version should I buy - 32bits or 64bits?

Cheers, Erik Richard

You have a Mac. Why in the world would you need Windows?

Two reasons...
1. I have some applications that will only run on Windows. Until now
I've been running XPPro on my other MacPro - also in a VM.
2. I still test software especially for visually and reading impaired
that donot run on Mac OS X.

I know I could buy a cheap Win-box to do the testing, but since I myself
a.m.o. need to use ZoomView it'll be easier - and cheaper - for me to
use a VM on the MacPro. - If I should buy a similar enlargement tool for
Windows, it will be very expensive...

Cheers, Erik Richard

I run Windows 7 in a Parallels VM to web site testing. I test my site
against Internet Explorer. I've found that I could use Crossover for IE
7, 8, or 9. So I run the latest release (10?) on Parallels.

It's a pain firing it up monthly, having to reset my password (it
automatically expires after 30 days), and update Windows, Adobe, Opera,
Firefox, and Chrome. The virtual disk has ballooned to 64GB even though
I regularly defragment and compress it. I think I'm about ready to
reinstall Windows. The problem is that my codes don't work any more and
I have to call Microsoft to reauthorize a Windows install. They don't
seem to understand what Virtual instance and that I bought Windows and
am re-installing on a VM. Which is weird because M$ partners with
VMware to sell Windows 2008 Server as their controller. And that's a
$600 CD.

He's already got a valid copy that he or his employers paid for.

Money doesn't grow on trees. I had great difficulty reauthorising a copy
of Windows 8 to work in a different VM because of the obstacles Microsoft
put in my way.

My solution would be to get a cracked copy. Problem solved.

Could be, but since I sometimes also have to contact Microsoft, when I'm
testing the various appications, it wouldn't be that nice to have a
cracked copy. - The nice thing would be if MS would sponsor me with a
legal copy.:-)

As already written I have a full legal Parallels 6.x laying on the
writing table just waiting to be installed with a Windows 7 version...

The OEM disk is a valid copy. Got it from TigerDirect. Came with all the
certificates. It validated when I first installed it, but when I had to
install it again, it didn't validate any more and I had to call for
authorization codes. I paid good money for it, so why isn't it a valid
copy?

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer
Such a version is inly valid when installed on the original computer it
came with, as intended. Anyone selling OEM versions separately is
breaking their Microsoft agreement, and the law in some countries.

No, they aren't! If you buy either Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion
you're legalized to buy an OEM version of a given Microsoft windows version!

Also some stores/resellers are legalized to sell OEM Windows systems,
when they at the same time sell a piece of hardware that can be used
with the computer to which the system is intended.

Selling Windows versions - i.e. fx. to a standard self-built PC isnot legal!

When I bought my Parallels Desktop 4.x I bought it along with a OEM ver.
of Microsoft Windows XPPro SP2/DK - and that at a Mac reseller store here.

Yes, they are. "OEM" version *MUST* come with the "Original Equipment"
and that is where the software in *ONLY* allowed to be installed /
reinstalled ... hence the term "OEM". :-\

The manufacturer pays a special license fee to include the software
with their equipment. Most of the companies making Windows PCs have
such a deal.

Anyone selling "OEM" versions of software *separately* is breaking that
license agreement, if not also the law. In some cases "OEM" labelled
software is simply mass-pirated versions by unlicensed retailers.

Assuming it was a legal pack, then that is because those VMWare /
Parallels (or Virtual PC on 'classic' Macs) or in some case the
retailer has paid the license fee to be allowed to legally bundle an
OEM verison of Windows, with the Desktop / Fusion virtual computer
being the "Original Equipment" it is to be used with. Again, if you
install that version on a proper PC or even under Boot Camp, then you
are breaking the licence aggreement.

Balderdash. You can buy OEM distributions separately from a computer.

They also come with software to build your own custom installation and
"first boot startup experience", and strictly speaking you are supposed
to resell the computer, but Microsoft have never enforced this.

From a pro-Microsoftie:

<http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/is-it-ok-to-use-oem-windows-on-your-own-pc-dont-ask-microsoft/1561>

and a bit more:

<http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2009/11/16/the-oem-eula-mystery-unravelled/>

Since Windows 8 came out they have apparently changed their stance, and
specifically allow you to run it on a computer you build yourself, or in
a separate partition or virtual machine

Because, as I already said, the Parallels Desktop / Fusion virtual
computer is the "Original Equipment" from the licensed "manufacturer",
Parallels / VMWare. It's a bundle deal, same as having the OEM version
come with a real computer. You still aren't meant to install that
version on any other device or virtualisation / emulation product. It's
ONLY FOR USE WITH THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT.

Plus, as you've just said, they have a *licence* to bundle it, which is
what I said all along.

Anyone selling OEM products *SEPARATELY* or installing that software on
other equipment is breaking the OEM agreement, and in some places that
is illegal (which is why it's often dodgey Asian webstores that sell
OEM products separately).

Good grief! I know words with more than one syllable are difficult for
most Internet users to understand since they switch their brains off
when turning on the modem, but it ain't exactly rocket science.

OEM = ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER,
ie. the manufacturer licensed to bundle the OEM software with their
equipment. :-\
