Outbound TELNET yes, and it can be a very useful diagnostic tool. You can
if you want TELNET to port 119 of your news provider and relive that BBS
style interface for reading and posting news.

OS X also has inbound TELNET, which is disabled by default. I did enable
inbound TELNET in the Panther/Tiger era just for the heck of it, but it
wasn't easy to do so. Someone at Apple sensibly thought it wasn't a good
idea so put some obstacles in the way.

Considering the NSA's interest in anything encrypted, it is probably
safer these dasy to use telnet instead of SSH :-)

When connected to devices internally, SSH is a waste of computer
resources. And yes, telnet is useful to access routers, ATAs and a whole
bunch of networking equipment.

Interestingly, there are far more (orders of magnitudes) attempts to
connect to SSH port than to the telnet port with brute force login attempts.

Nope, just encrypt everything.

I am hopeful that in the next 5 years I will be able to reject all
connections to my mailserver that are not encrypted, for example.
Already about 2/3 at last count are, but that still leaves a lot, even
on my small mailserver.

Yeah, that's what Google thought until they found out the NSA was inside
and tapping their internal connections.

Always encrypt. Always.

Really old networking equipment.

You don't have to brute force telnet, the connections and passwords are
sent in plaintext, so if you've seen the connection, you have the
password.
