It lets them build networks of who's talking to whom, to find and
identify cells of bad guys. The courts have said, in analogy to the
exterior of an envelope in the postal mail, that no one has an
expectation of privacy for the name and address of sender and
recipient.

People actually don't do that per se, but set a time period of retention
following the first POP. Also they are limited to how much they can
leave, so eventually they would stop receiving new e-mails if the ISP
side were full.
I have mine set for 1 day retention following a POP. Any issues I've
had with POP go back to the early 90's.

I've tried IMAP on several occasions only to find folders I don't want
in Apple Mail and messages marked unread that have been read and so on
(that was with Google Mail IMAP). So I pop my e-mail from Google and
keep on popping it from my ISP.
As usual what is excellent for you is not excellent for everyone and v-v.

Speaking of POP vs. IMAP ... In Mavericks, how does one create a new POP account "from scratch" ?? By that, I mean withOUT importing account settings through Migration Assistant, etc. I tried to do it, and the only option it seems to offer is IMAP...

Hello David, Thanks for the reply. I haven't actually had the need to "create a POP account from scratch" yet (since I was able to "import account settings" from my older OS). However, I'm looking ahead to some point where I might have to create a POP account without having the prior settings from which to import. Seems like Apple purposely makes it difficult for the user to choose POP if that's what the user wishes. I prefer a POP-style mail arrangement and don't want IMAP.

Mail first tests the mail server to discover which protocols it supports. If it offers both POP and IMAP, Mail picks IMAP without giving you a choice. To get around this, enter the wrong password for the account. Mail should then go into a less automated setup mode in which you can select POP (and enter the correct password).

Yes, this - asking for a username and password before allowing
an account to be configured - is a bit of a pain.

I use IMAP. However, I still feel the option to choose POP or IMAP should be easy to access without requiring sneaky tricks. Nots that I have 2 accounts to point to the same mailbox, one via IMAP, one via POP. There are times where I may need to use/test one of the other. I can see Apple wishing to transition to IMAP and eventually deprecate POP, just as they have NFS and now in process of moving away from AFP. So i can understand (but not agree with) their attempt to make it hard to find a way to configure POP.

It is easy for a company such as Apple to decide that POP is obsolete and that it should "steer" its customer base away from it. By making POP harder to configure, it will push all new users to use IMAP. Considering how those companies get boners with the "cloud" buzzword, and considering that POP is not very good for "cloud", once could see arguments for those companies (apple, google, microsoft) prefering IMAP to POP since IMAP makes use of central mail store on their servers which can be data mined for targetted ads, help the NSA and friends etc. Also, I think the image is that POP is an old protocol like telnet and should be relegated to museums. IMAP takes more resources for the service in terms of storage (though storage is very cheap and it takes much less resources in terms of processing). The reason is that for the vast majority of users, IMAP is clearly superior. Most people are not living in a one device world. Old retired people with one computer who don't leave home are not representative of the population in general. > Also, I think the image is that POP is an old protocol like telnet and > should be relegated to museums. Well, there is NTLM, Kerberos, ...

Telnet sessions, on the other hand, are not encrypted.

Well, as someone who got fed up with the loss of MT-NW on Mavericks and
am now deep into developing my own Usenet reader, coding ain't cheap. A
lot of people consider POP as dead as NNTP, and so they devote their
resources to more "popular" features like IMAP (or Twitter and Facebook
for social stuff). If your love of POP is limited to what you can get
for free, you're looking at the wrong party when you blame companies for
limiting options.

I read and re-read it all before, including the various RFCs and their
updates. There is plenty I don't like, and much that is completely
outdated. Right now, I don't care if I'm swimming upstream to complete
a fool's errand. Right now, the echos of what people thought Usenet
should be in 1995 ring hollow when I couldn't even find a damn libnntp
to base my reader on; neither one that gets used by all the existing
newsreaders, nor one that got made by any of their efforts.
That all sounds more hostile than it should. My underlying point
remains that, despite there being a lot of "open" and "free" software, a
lot of poor design and architecture makes it brittle. Whether it's POP
or IMAP or NNTP that gets used for moving messages *could* be abstracted
away, but lessons aren't being learned. And until people are motivated
to pay for better software, they shouldn't be surprised when they don't
get it.

Well, yea, things have changed somewhat over the last 20 years. But...

...I'd suggest looking at (and borrowing from, speaking of nntp libs)
slrn and tin.

Both of these are what I'd call better software, although they're
both character cell terminal (no GUI) newsreaders.

I'd suggest you actually look at the source for either before you make
such a suggestion. As I said, *none* of the existing readers (including
previous Mac efforts like Newsflash) seem to have been written with the
intention of sharing the code with other projects. They all have a
single src directory with massive cross-dependencies and no
documentation that would even *suggest* you could easily factor out an
independent library that just handled the protocol details.

They're definitely software that have had a lot of hours put into their
coding, but don't mistake that as being what defines "better". Again,
the reading of messages is *independent* of how you move those messages
around. Not understanding that is why their code has been limited to
terminal use of NNTP, and vice versa.
Believe me, I would *love* to find some open source code for a
newsreader that looked like the developers knew they needed to package
it for other developers to read/use. If you can actually point me to
that, you'd be a hero-by-proxy. Otherwise, your suggestions are better
aimed at the developers of existing Usenet software.

I have. I did a lot of work on tin before the current group of people
maintaining it (who are quite good) took it up.

Of course not.

Hmm. I thought C is self-documenting. More or less. Heh.

Better to me means it works, and works well. Particularly in the
real world, where not everyone follows the RFCs/standards/etc.

They're character cell (text) terminal based newsreaders because
Usenet is a text medium.

I'd like to, but I don't think it (yet..) exists.

Well.. There's a lot of info available in tin/slrn sources that'd
be useful to anyone.
