Data on the iCloud servers is backed up by Apple, just like any other server provider, but the iCloud service is not really meant to be a backup solution as such. It's an internet data storage solution.

It's an internet data storage solution. Thanks, but I want my data available 24/7/365, on my terms, at my whim, on any (or no) notice, accessed the way I want to access it, regardless of whether or not I happen to have a network connection active at the moment I decide I want to do something with it. Which means local storage. If, for whatever reason, I don't have my data on my local drives, it's utterly worthless to me under several sets of circumstances, no matter how well it might be backed up, stored, protected, etc. Which means that, at least for me, cloud storage is absolutely out of the question. (But that hasn't changed since the first time I heard of the concept, so... <shrug>) -- Security provided by Mssrs Smith and/or Wesson. Brought to you by the letter Q

(But that hasn't changed since the first time I heard of > the concept, so... <shrug>) Being on a dial-up connection, I'm certainly not arguing with you on that. I don't want to use silly cloud-based systems either. :-) Even with broadband connections, here in New Zealand most of over-priced plans have silly data caps, which makes using cloud systems (storage or apps like Office 365) rather silly or even more expensive. Even using multiple computers (say a work one and a home one) it's still far easier and cheaper just to use a USB drive of some sort.

That may be so... for a fraction of a percent of users. So what about IMAP for those users? In a couple of weeks they´ll have several gigs of data on the server. In a year that would be 26 gig. Btw: I´m not saying that IMAP is generally bad. I´m saying it depends on the user. For me POP3 is the better choice, for you it´s IMAP. Nothing to start a war about, just good to have alternatives.

Since you don't need to access your email from multiple devices, POP will do you just fine *IF* you're not one of those uses who uses their INBOX as a folder. If you file stuff away in folders after you read it and keep a clean INBOX, you'll gain nothing from IMAP vs POP unless you loose a hard drive or have a senior moment or accidentally delete something from your voluminous INBOX. Then you'll have to rely on your Time Capsule's backup to restore your email from the last snapshot. The huge INBOX isn't a big thing unless you're a sysadmin who has to deal with users like you who leave a 10K message INBOX on the servers /var/mail. It's read in and downloaded EVERY TIME the user logs into mail. With IMAP, only the headers are sent to the mail client. But you're protected by TimeMachine, so everything should be fine. We'll stop trying to convince you to switch to IMAP. Until your ISP decides to outsource email (like they did newgroups) and only offers IMAP servers. Then you'll have to find a new ISP. Apple's Mail does both. Newer email apps only do IMAP (e.g. Sparrow Mail and AirMail come to mind) because "everyone uses the Cloud". -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... In my application I can set the POP to also leave the email on the server for X days ... which of course makes it similar to IMAP anyway.

As long as your email client tells the POP server to delete the message
there (after some delay of days or so), then there is no issue with the
inbox.

All I had to do is change the account data and I was done. Please remind me what you have to do, if you change providers when you use IMAP. And for the mail app: I don´t like Apple Mail or Thunderbird or any of the others, so I wrote my own which works just the way I want it to.

Ah, you too! I wrote mine (see http://www.iletter.org.uk) in case the two touted "Eudora replacements", MailForge and Eudora OSE, failed, which they have both done. And it only does POP, although this is largely because I have never looked into IMAP and know nothing about it.
