My faithful G4 MDD PowerMac3,6 would not boot. The screen would start out with a folder, then a happy Mac, then a Slashed circle. It did so with 3 bootable volumes in the system: A 10.4 SATA RAID with PCI controller, a 10.4 PATA raid, and a bootable DVD. The last thing I did was set the startup disk to the DVD drive. I did find the PRAM battery dead. But replacing it made things worse; the machine would not even try to boot. So I removed the new battery. It would start into Target mode. I finally pulled the SATA controller; and low and behold, it booted off the PATA drive. After I reset the startup drive, I powered down, reinstalled the SATA controller, booted again and reset the startup to there. Then I put in the new battery. One issue appears to be the Open Firmware was NOT recognizing the various keyboard commands, i.e. C for CD boot, OPTION for a choice, PR, OF, etc. But T was, usually. I've seen this before with non-apple keyboards, and used to keep an original Bondi Blue one around for this reason. Now I can't find same, Grrr. But does anyone know why it would not seek out a bootable drive, when it didn't like the DVD? -- A host is a host from coast to coast.................wb8foz@nrk.com & no one will talk to a host that's close........[v].(301) 56-LINUX Unless the host (that isn't close).........................pob 1433 is busy, hung or dead....................................20915-1433

Yep, but I take that into account; and several functions use neither or both so it does not matter.... -- A host is a host from coast to coast.................wb8foz@nrk.com & no one will talk to a host that's close........[v].(301) 56-LINUX Unless the host (that isn't close).........................pob 1433 is busy, hung or dead....................................20915-1433

I think the slashed circle means trouble with boot.efi. One thing boot.efi does is load drivers. I wonder if it was on a wild goose chase for SATA software.

Could be. I also found the DVD drive was not reading my new 10.5
DVD. {I made it from a dmg file I had on hand....} I used a FW
cable & a Mini in Target Mode.
I first installed it on one of the PATA RAID's, then went back &
installed it on the SATA pair.
I now have 10.5 running on my "old faithful..." MDD. With it,
the latest CrashPlan update installed itself...and I'm on the
way.
