Ever since the latest Mavericks upgrade (10.9.2 on a late 2011 15-inch MacBook
Pro with 8GB of memory), I have had system crashes with increasing frequency.
The crash reports seemed to point to memory leaks, and Time Machine seemed to
be the common factor. I tried to get Apple Support to tell me if/where I could
get a fresh copy of it, and couldn't even get them to say yes or no without
paying them for the trivial answer.

The system passed all hardware tests I could find, memory passed all tests, and
the disks passed their diagnostics, too.

I finally bit the bullet, hoped my often crashed Time Machine backups would be
sufficient if needed, booted the recovery partition and used it to reinstall
the OS. It took hours, of course, and still needed one update (Safari), but
has now been crash-free for over 24 hours, so I am cautiously exhaling ...
