I'm stunned! It's in Crucial's best interest to state the higher
number, after all.
Go with the larger figure. Esp. if confirmed by MacTracker.

I took OWC's word for it when I put 6GB into my previous MBP (which Apple said would only handle 4GB). It worked fine. OWC can't guarantee this kind of thing, but they do try it out and only suggest it if they've found that it works. They've never steered me wrong.

Likewise (bumped my iMac from 4 to 6 - just wished I had known about
that when I added 2 to the original 2).

I was under the impression that Crucial would test the true limits of systems. If they stick to limits from Apple, it explains the discrepancy.

I wish Apple would simply state the maximum amount of RAM supported by the hardware, rather than using whatever chip size & combo is available at the time they write the specifications. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I suppose it's what they test at the time.
Still, updating the spec over time or issuing a bulletin would be nice
of them...
In the meantime there's OWC and MacTracker and others who test without
trepidation.

Another question: For my MacPro, looking at what is available for 1066, EEC unbuffered, the 4 GB dimms tend to be CL=7, while the 8 GB dimms tend to be CL-9 (which implies slower processing). Is this due to lower quality, or just the fact of life that there are more "switches" to go through inside the memory bar to reach the desired memory location and thus lower performance ? For a MacPro, would this be something that would be noticeable, or something I shouldn't worry about ? I am currently at 3*4GB, with 1 slot left. I could add 1 more 4GB to get to 16 GB, all dimms at CL-7, or add 2* 8GB at CL-9, and leave 2*4GB at CL-7. Would this be a problem if the class is different ? Would I put the faster bars in the last 2 rows and slower ones in the first ones ? all would be ECC Unbuffered 1066 240pin DDR3
