The virtual machine products won't let you install Leopard or Snow Leopard, which can be worked around but it is fiddly and there isn't any point wasting time on it. Apple sells Snow Leopard Server for the same price as Snow Leopard (about US$20), and it is allowed to be used in a virtual machine. You can set up Snow Leopard Server with most of its server functionality disabled, and once configured, using it is almost indistinguishable from Snow Leopard. It has Rosetta. I have this arrangement set up on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro (I had installed it on my previous MacBook Pro and it was migrated to this one), via VMware Fusion. I only use that particular VM on rare occasions, either to test something specific to Snow Leopard, or to run a PowerPC application. Incidentally, I also had a Leopard Server VM, and it stopped working (the VM kernel panics during startup). I don't need it any more so I haven't investigated whether it is compatibility problem introduced in a VMware Fusion upgrade, or something got damaged inside the VM, or some other explanation. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Thanks.
In effect, for $20 plus whatever Fusion|Parallels goes for, people are
covered for their legacy s/w for quite a while while they look for
alternates... or not.

I used to have a Snow Leopard VM when I ran Parallels 7 under 10.8. It was useful for the handful of PowerPC apps I still have. Parallels 7 broke under Mavericks and instead of spending the $50 to upgrade to Parallels 9 I just ditched the whole virtual machine thing and installed Snow Leopard on a small partition of my hard drive. I just reboot into it when I need to. It's a little less convenient than the virtual machine, but not $50 less convenient. -- K. Lang may your lum reek.

If you already have a disk or disk image of a Snow Leopard system already installed, can't you just get the VM engine to load it up ? In other words, is the retriction imposed at OS-X install time, or when you configure the VM to load a particular OS instance ?

IIRC, Apple doesn't allow non-server 10.6 and earlier in VMs. Servers in
VM are OK. Stupid, I know. :(

Stupid, I know. :( Frankly, I don't care about what apple allows or doesn't allow for an OS version it has stopped supporting. I already run Snow Leopard, it is already setup and running. I much prefer to .DMG that drive and boot it under a VM so I could run the apps that no longer run in later versions of OS-X rather than having to setup a totally new instance and re-install everything so it it is installed on a "server" version. I can understand the rules at the time SNow Leopard was current. But I certaintly do not feel I would be breaking the spirit of the rules by booting Snow Leopard from time to time to run an app that Apple no lnger allows to run. I'll give you an example: One slide looked fine, but with VueScan, I had a very very hard time scanning it properly. I started up the unreliable Nikon Scan 4 (PowerPC only) and it scanned that slide quite well. Woudl Apple send lawyers after me if doing the exact same operation involved booting up a VM instance of SL to run that app for a few minutes ? Would I feel guilty doing it ? Not one bit. Would SL actually boot on the VM, or are there restrictions in the OS at boot time ? Or is it only at install time ? Is there a way to convert a desktop instance to a server instance by changing something in a .plist and entering a valid server license ? (which I have).

The checks are done both at installation and at startup of the VM. I've never bothered investigating the details or how to work around it, as the server edition was cheap enough. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

They aren't selling it via the online store, but there have been numerous reports of people getting it by ringing Apple Sales (local telephone number is listed on each online store page) and ordering it for US$20, for about the last year. Some had difficulty ordering the right product, as they were supplied the non-server version by mistake, and had to arrange for it to be exchanged with the server edition. Mentioning the product code will help: MC588Z/A > Amazon have it for about £60 That's where I got mine, for a similar price, shortly before I heard about Apple's even cheaper option. I bought mine in late February 2013, which means I've been aware of the Apple store option since around March or April 2013. I had intended to buy it for some time prior to that, but I hadn't found a reasonable price until I noticed Amazon had it cheaper than usual, so I jumped in case it was a short term special. I could have saved more by waiting, but so be it. The original retail price was US$499 and Amazon's only offerings were over U$300, which I couldn't justify spending as I had other ways to run PowerPC applications. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
