So you're saying the path changed, but not the use of sqlite3 ?

I never noticed the change in path. And since using the prior command
never generated an error message I assumed all was well...

No, I'm saying your information is woefully out of date. the sqlite3
vacuum comamnd is not needed and hasn't been for a long time.

As evidence of how out of date your info is, the path to the files has
changed, but not the path in the 'tip'.

> I never noticed the change in path. And since using the prior command

It never generated an error message because you were doing absolutely
nothing by issuing a command against a file that did not exist. This
would also explain why the command was so fast for you. Instantaneous,
even.

Running vacuum against the actual index will take time.

$ ls -lsn ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope\ Index && \
  time sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/V3/MailData/Envelope\ Index vacuum && \
  ls -lsn ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope\ Index
221848 -rw-r--r--@ 1 1002  staff  113586176 Feb 27 17:44 /Users/kreme/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index

real    0m11.535s
user    0m8.645s
sys 0m1.426s
221848 -rw-r--r--@ 1 1002  staff  113586176 Feb 28 16:18 /Users/kreme/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index

11 seconds real time, identical file size.

Thanks for that.

I don't see why it would be, as a simple, small security
patch (update) would have sufficed. But, since it's Apple,
one never knows.

For once in my life random chance operated in my favor, and
I had no problems at all after installing 10.9.2.
