Well, I suppose we can disagree over whether an option which does not
work as advertised should even be called an option.

OK. It suggests that, but it doesn't always *do* it.

Yes. All of you told me something that *looks like* it should work, but
sometimes *does not*.

And that is what I wanted advice on how to fix.

Yup.

Yes, it does. It's not labeled that, of course, it is labeled "Sort by:
none".

> In my original post, I observed that that does not always work on the

The only way it "doesn't work" is if you drag a group of files and drop
them, in which case the system will spread them out rather than dropping
them into one pile. You can then rearrange them to make one pile if you
like.

Yes it is. I may be "Sort By" but it's been part of the finder since
System 7 days.

But again, options on how to sort them.

That will only happen if there isn't another icon in the way and if
there are no sort options set.

Yes they are.

Something like this happens to me when dragging anything out of the
downloads folder stack and dropping it on the desktop. It will always
land higher and to the right (several icons worth of distance) from
where it is dropped. This is on OS 10.9.1.

> Have you set a View Option and Arrange by pref for Finder?

I am using the Sort by: Snap to Grid option. The grid spacing is
set in the middle of the range of choices. When the above occurs,
the landing position is not aligned on the grid, and frequently it
will be somewhat on top of something else that was already there
(the 20 or so items on the right side of the desktop).

I've seen the same behavior.

Not sure why it happens, but it's usually after I copy a
file to the desktop that's from another volume. At first,
I'm thinking "the file didn't copy" -- until I look up into
the extreme upper-left-hand corner and find it partially
visible there.

I'm wondering if this has something to do with the
".dsStore" files?

I've had that same "didn't copy" suspicion. In my case, the file was
definitely on the same volume.

OS X 10.8 used to do that but 10.9 (or some setting...) has fixed it for me.
