Liberals need to learn that “inevitable" is not a synonym for “good." Conservatives should learn that “inevitable" is not a synonym for “bad.”

The data is a file full of numbers so to me it's single. The multiple only comes up with there are many "data files" not many datas or datum. I think the world "data" got used about 5 thousand times a day in that building, but I never heard datum, and only heard "the data are" from newbies, interns, recent hires, etc. Not that this fixes the word's usage in time and space. I've found that nothing fixes words in time and space, or at least not for very long. Thus both "bad" and "sick" seem to be descriptors of "good music". But that's another cul-de-sac...

The data are the numbers in the file. And you just heard that from a
thirty-year software engineer.

She and her father, a distinguished social reformer, wrote and sang "Valley Girl" to lampoon the slang of her peers. They found this language "grody to the max," which apparently came from the term "grotty" in the 1964 film "A Hard Day's Night," which term perhaps derived from the Middle English "groti," meaning "muddy, slimy." Apparently her peers said, "I'm like" to recount their experiences with facial expressions as well as words. They released the song as a 12" single on the Barking Pumpkin label. Instead of saying, "Gag me with a spoon," the public loved it. It became his only top-40 hit, popularizing the very slang they were trying to "nip in the bud."

Decimate is neither misunderstood nor misused. What it meant thousands
of years ago bears *no* relation to what it means in modern use, and
that is "kill or destroy a large portion". Anyone who claims it may only
be used to mean "kill exactly 1 in 10) is not only a pedantic boob, but
also completely incorrect.

A quantum leap would be a "leap" of 1.62 X 10E-35 meters--the > Planck length, the smallest distance that can be. The term "quantum leap" when used outside physics is a metaphor for the fact that quantum changes are sudden and discontinous. While they're miniscule with respect to the macroscopic universe, they're quite abrupt in the sub-atomic realm. In general, you can't expect metaphors to adopt all the nuances of the concept from which they're derived. They often pick just one salient feature of the original concept. In this case it's the abruptness. From Wikipedia: Although changes of quantum state occur on the submicroscopic level, in popular discourse, the term "quantum leap" refers to a large increase. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_electron_transition Wiktionary: 1. (physics) The discontinuous change of the state of an electron in an atom or molecule from one energy level to another. 2. (metaphorical) An abrupt change. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/quantum_leap Merriam-Webster: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/quantum%20leap an abrupt change, sudden increase, or dramatic advance -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***
