spotlight won't always find things when searching on partial file names.

What will it not find?

exactly as i wrote, partial name searches will fail.

it also does not index every folder, and if the file you want is in one
of those folders, well that's just too bad.

another problem is there is no consistency check of the index and if it
is corrupted (which happens on occasion, nothing is perfect), you'll
never know, other than searches return no results. there is no error.

that means there's no way to know if it didn't find something because
it really isn't there or if it was because of a spotlight problem. you
can't ever be sure.

That's half the things I feed it so I'm unconvinced.

You've proved to me that there is a possibility it won't find what I'm
looking for. But my real world experience is that it DOES find what I'm
looking for. Maybe the level of obscurity in our searches is
dramatically different.

i'm assuming you started with the first letter and did not complete the
full name. that will work. if you start anywhere after the first
letter, it will fail.

for example, if the file name is 'mavericks' and you search for 'mav'
it will work, but if you search for 'ricks' it will fail. even if you
search for 'avericks', it will fail.

if the file name has camelcase, it may work if the search term begins
at the start of one of the sub-words, as it does when the name is
separated by spaces.

this has been broken since spotlight first appeared and it still is on
mountain lion (just confirmed it), so i expect it to still be broken on
mavericks.

one scenario where this is a problem is if you have a number of files
with a common ending, such as biology, physiology, hematology,
pathology, etc., and you want all of them, so you search on 'ology' and
you get nothing.

Not in my world. I frequently search for song titles (I have a 100k
mp3's) and can look for "very young" and find "For the Very Young" or
"of my mind" and find "Stoned Out of My Mind", "Windmills of my mind",
"My Heart Has a Mind of It's Own", "I Can't Get Mississippi Off of my
Mind" and so forth.

I do note if I type "indmills", it won't pull up "windmills", nor does
"ery young" pulle up "very Young", so you have a point. But apparently
I don't think to search for partial words". Lucky me.

that's because those are full words, not partials.

also, why are you using finder to manage music? itunes does a much
better job.

lucky you.

it's broken. they are requiring a search term to *must* be the
beginning of a word.

that's a very strange definition of partial.

I use it to launch apps constantly. I rarely use it to find a
document, at least not via the spotlight from the main menu bar. I do
use the search in the Finder windows all the time, since that makes it
much easier to switch to a search by filename rather than by file
contents. And, yes, that's still Spotlight.

What I actually use the little menu bar magnifying glass search for
most often, or perhaps second only to launching apps, is for
calculations. Just start entering numbers and operations and it's the
easy to use always there handy dandy desktop calculator. (It would be
nice if there was a key to hit to copy the result of a calculation
right to the clipboard, though. Is there one that I haven't noticed?)

I've never seen a point in using Spotlight (nor Google) for calucations
either - that's what the Calculator application is for and that does
let you copy results from it, and paste numbers into it. If it still
exists in Lion, etc., then putting the Calculator in the Dock means
it's always handy (as is the numeric keypad if you do lots of number
crunching) - you could even define a keyboard shortcut to run it.

Google can actually do some more sophisticated computations (i.e., it'll
do unit conversions and all sorts of other things).

But the main thing for me using Spotlight for it is that it's just
there - all the time - no window to open, no anything else to get in
the way. It's just there.

If I'm doing a lot of computations, I'll either open up the calculator
(the "tape" is especially nice) or pull up a spreadsheet.

Using google for routine calculations makes no sense to me since it
means opening up my web browser and pointing a page at it - that's
certainly no faster or easier than the alternatives unless I happen
to already be doing a search in Google.

A keyboard shortcut for it might be helpful. But there's no substitute
for it just being *there* and for no window or app to have to start.

The Calculator application in Mac OS X does conversions too (at least
the version of Calculator in my Mac OS X 10.2.8 does) - measurements,
temperatures, currency, etc.

Set Calculator to open on startup and that will "always be there" too
by clicking on it's Dock icon (instead of the Spotlight box). :-)

There's always the silly Dashboard, that almost nobody uses, which has
(had?) a Calculator widget too. :-)

The last time I looked it thought a pint was a US pint, which isn't the
same as an Imperial pint...

Seems to me that clicking a Dock icon to open a calculator window is not
much different than clicking a magnifier icon to open the even bigger
Spotlight window.

I definitely don't use Dashboard, and either I turned it off and don't
remember, or Apple has discontinued it. In response to this thread, I
wanted to look at it and couldn't find it.

The magnifier icon is very much faster, even on a modern quad-core i7.
And there's no window involved at all. (And mind you, when I say "the
magnifier icon" I mean hit cmd-space and immediately type numbers). No
changing of windows, focus, nothing. Just cmd-space and type.

Ugh. Removing Dashboard from my Dock is perhaps the very first thing I
do when setting up a new account. (Second is probably removing
LaunchBar, but Dashboard's been wasting space on docks for a lot
longer).

I use the silly Dashboard frequently, to check time (elsewhere in the
world), a quick word or phrase translate into 4-5 other languages,
check the shifts in value between euro/dollar/yen, see the weather
radar--and occasionally do a quick calc.

I use a hotkey for the dashboard. I use a hot key for damned near
everything, either native if available, or via one of jillions of
quickey macros set up for the purpose.

That's more or less my use of Dashboard too, except I keep it in the
Dock. I have 4 clocks set up for different timezones and they really
come into their own around the twice yearly clock change - although I
can remember time zone differences I don't have to remember which
timezones change clocks on which dates.

The Units conversion widget is another one I find handy.

For currency rates I have been using xe.com for years. This site allows
you to do your own custom web pages with their information embedded,
which minimises the amount of clicking you have to do.
