Whether > there is a "Save As..." in there or not, this is the case. In some applications Save As also forces the application to re-create the document file, which gets rid of accumluated garbage no longer needed. "Duplicate" apparently doesn't do that. For example, working on a InDesign file and using Save can create quite large files if you are doing things like importing images and then later deciding you don't want them. Performing a "Save As" removes the no longer needed image data / links and the fileszie shrinks. The same used to hapen with PageMaker. It can also happen with Microsoft Office documents.

Duplicate followed by Revert (on the original). Two steps (including, in my opinion, the highly annoying "revert") - gets you what we all got used to as one single sensible step.

In the dialog box is a "do not keep modification in original file" tick box. Select that and you have "save as" functionality that is identical to the way it was in 10.6 and earlier. Robin

Two steps instead of one is not identical.
Forgetting the second results in the same screw-up
we were complaining about.

Moving goalposts. From a previous post of yours, you stated, "What Apple should have done with autosave is admit they screwed up, but since some people like it, make it a user-selectable option." The above is a description of the user-selectable option that Apple has provided. It seems to me that your preference is actually, "What Apple should have done is not made any changes since 10.6, but since some people like it, make it a user-selectable option." As you can still buy 10.6 and it is still supported, that option exists. Robin

And it's still there, only now it's option-shift-cmd-S. And if you hold the Option button down when you look at the menu, you'll see it, including the keyboard shortcut. I think Apple was just being a little annoying to not leave it there in the menu all the time. Having to remember additional far-from-obvious modifiers like Option when pulling down a *menu* is goofy. It's a menu and it's *supposed* to list a lot of options. Or, perhaps, for those of us who never use Duplicate, even better would be a system-wide Pref setting which leaves Save As... in all those menus in place of the Duplicate command. But so be it. Apple's not infallible. But they certainy responded to the outrage over 10.7's entire lack of Save As. Perhaps it's a more secure workflow to copy a file, rename it, *then* modify the new copy. But I have, for years, been just opening a file, modifying it, then hitting Save As... What I wish they'd bring back, which they had in 10.7 but did away with, was Auto-Lock. If I haven't modified a file in, say, a week or two, I *want* it locked. If I make edits, I want to make damned sure I make those edits on a new copy with a new file name, for lack of a true revision management system. (And, no, Revisions is cute and helpful, but it's certainly not a revision management system, not least because the repository is tied to the root of your filesystem and not the file, so it's not synced across systems or even copied when you copy the file.) > As I have said, nothing insurmountable, and nothing I cannot tolerate, > but I am irritated a tad, and I am mostly pleased with OSX 10.9. Strongly agreed. Possibly the most painless upgrade ever, and with subtle but actual improvements in speed, especially in my older machines.

It's not new to Save As nor to Apple's software.

But if I am in "Spotlight" I am not in a finder window. Going back to SG's question, when I am in Spotlight, if I hover over a file it will show me that thumnail. (Incidentally if the thumnail is an audio or (some) video files, if you move your cursor over the image you can play it right there). If I hold the Apple/Command key down while I am hovering, the thumbnail will give me the full name of the file. Of course this isn't the path. I mentioned this to another and they were unfamiliar so I mention it here: While you hover, if you hit Cmd-r it will take you to that file in its home folder, where you can see (as Alan indicates above) the full path at the bottom of the display.

In the older version ( fortunately I have such an older version on my steam driven MBP 17'') I can make a search in "Spotlight"and get the path information without opening the file or folder. You mean my copy of Star Wars: Rebel Assault for "Macintosh LC III or
higher" should work on the very latest iMac ... woo hoo!! And here I
was thinking I would have to muck about with Sheep Shaver or similar
emulators when I upgrade this PowerMac. ;-)
There's an old joke about PC software requirements saying they need
"Windows 95 or better" and because we use the better Mac OS the
software should run. :-)
You should generally take the "or later", "or newer", "or higher" type
tags in system requirement specifications to mean newer sub-suffixes of
that OS version. For example, "Mac OS X 10.7 or later" should be taken
to mean anything in the 10.7.x range while "Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later"
would mean 10.5.8 or 10.5.9, etc.
Even then there's no guarantee that some system fix update won't break
other software, but it's the full version upgrades that are most likely
to break older software.
At least LinkSys / Cisco is smart enough to list the various full
versions of Mac OS X, rather than just a point blank "10.5.8 or later".
Usually with a router / modem you can change it's setting via a web
browser, which may be a way around your problem.

Perhaps.
I will explore that option. I was just a little amazed by the quality
of idiot employed at the LinkSys/Cisco support desk.

Help / Support Desk staff are often just a load of students working
part-time or agency staff, reading off a supplied "script", and they
know nothing about what is really happening.
I've given up even bothering to ring Vodafone New Zealand whenever
there's a problem with my Internet connection because the Help Desk
always claims there is no problem even when I'm telling them there is.
They then start the idiot process of trying to fix my computer (which
has nothing wrong with it) by going through the Windows'
troubleshooting process, despite me having told them multiple times I'm
using a Mac ... once thet gets through their braindead script-reading
skulls, they then try to run through the troubleshooting script for the
very newest Mac OS X, despite me telling them it's an old version (or
before my OS upgrade that it was Mac OS 9).

Yep. I've still got piles of 3.5" floppy disks for the Commodore Amiga,
and somewhere I may also still have a couple of cassette tapes from the
Commodore 64 and VIC-20 days. :-)

They're in a box in the garage.

They're in a box in the garage. I still have the socks I wore on graduation day in 1969.
