Okay now the micro-element nobody gives a damn about that is a
strikingly big nuisance for me.

I do most everything in the finder in list view. I use to color flag,
which can mean anything like (important or outgoing, or something).
But now all those colored file names are no longer colored. They have
a teensy-tinesy color dot 3 inches to the left. I'm supposed to be
looking at little dots instead of wide swaths of color to demand my
attention.

That sucks: It doesn't command my eye and attention. Useless.

Oh it's cool to be able to sort on "important" and "outgoing" across
folders, but not hardly so good as being able to see flagged folders or
documents directly with YOUR EYES.

Yup! You have a vote from me on this issue.
Pretty and neat is not always the most useful.

Now, how do we get this fixed?

I hear it's fixed in 10.8!

You can, since sending Steve Jobs a note is no longer an
option, file a bug report. The worst that can happen is
you'll get a reply that says, "works as intended.'

For whatever reason, Apple seem to be seriously hung up
on gratuitous interface changes. It's a sad situation,
especially these days when even automobiles all look
pretty much alike.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a change made by Ives as part of his
mono-chroming of Mac OS X. He largely removed all the colour from iOS 7
with his silly "flat" software design, making much of it more difficult
to see / read, and no doubt he's now busy continuing what he aleady
started in Mac OS X. :-(

Ives should *NOT* be in charge of software ... he's a object designer,
not a technicaly wizard. It's a bit like allowing the bakery department
head to dictate what the meat department does, or allowing an actor to
"sing" (just look at William Shatner and David Hasselhoff to see how
well that works out).

Considering that you can't even get his name right, why should anyone
pay any attention to what you say about him?

I like, for the most part, the changes in iOS 7's UI; I don't have all
those buttons and controls distracting me from the content and/or
taking up valuable screen space.

Oh no, an extra "s". Must be the end of the world!! :-\

Of course it's not "distracting" because everything all looks the same
and blends into a barely seeable mess.

Maybe you need to get your eyes checked. Even with my poor vision and
cataracts, I have no problems seeing those controls when I need or want
to see them.

When Apple came out with Snow Leopard, people complained because there
weren't any significant updates to the UI. When Apple came out with
Lion, people complained because there were changes to the UI.

When iOS 6 came out, people complained about the UI being aged and not
up to date, and complained about skeuomorphism. When iOS 7 came out,
people complained because the UI changed and that there was no
skeuomorphism.

they also complained that os x kept adding features and not fixing
long-standing bugs, then when snow leopard came out which was mostly
under the hood fixes and improvements, they complained that there
wasn't a whole lot of new stuff in it.

I like that it's simpler, but my sixty-year-old eyes don't like the
reduction in contrast. He's a designer, right. The kind of designer
who says "screw legibility; this is ART"

My 71 year old nearsighted eyes with cataracts have no problem with the
reduction in contrast. And for those who need more contrast, there's
an option for that.

Agree. As another respondent noted, this appears to be a gratuitous
change. For my purposes, it essentially eliminates the labeling
function that I have found so useful in the Mac OS for many years.
Nothing gained, everything lost.
