#51224 — Any Rosetta rumors?

FromTed Lee <tmplee@mr.net>

SubjectAny Rosetta rumors?
Message-ID<l4p122$o6d$1@dont-email.me>
As I mentioned a few days ago, it's been awhile since I've been on this
newsgroup. The chatter about Mavericks prompts me to ask a question
that I imagine has come up now and again -- has there been any serious
discussion of someone coming up with a 3rd-party equivalent of Rosetta
so irreplaceable OS X PPC apps can still be run? SheepShaver works
great for PPC stuff that will run on OS 9.0.4., but that's it.

not likely to happen. not enough potential customers to bother (and
shrinking), even if it was technically realistic.

You'd think the customer base for that would be much, much larger than
the base for SheepShaver, and yet the latter continues to be
well-maintained by volunteers.

why? intel macs have been around for 7 years. software that is still
powerpc has not been updated in at least that long.

if whatever the software did was needed by many people, it would have
been updated or a competitor would have made their own version.

or, there's a windows equivalent, which can be run in vmware or
parallels.

there's no money in making a powerpc emulator and it's not at all
simple anyway.

what are these irreplaceable apps? there's probably a replacement.

Um, my point was that SheepShaver emulates an even older PPC than a
Rosetta replacement would, and yet there is enough of a "customer" base
for that that it continues to be well supported.

As to that "old" software -- there are pieces of software which have no
Intel equivalent or which would be very difficult to migrate to the
closest equivalent. At least the ones I care about run under
SheepShaver, so the problem is "solved" with them.

sheep shaver began life long ago.

Somehow I think it's ironic that a person who posts anonymously asks
about nameless apps, as if I'd committed some kind of a faux pas by not
naming them.

Mangia, WealthBuilder, and Appleworks, at least. I forget the history
of Clarisworks/Appleworks, but some versions of them will run under
SheepShaver (OS 9.0.4) and some won't. I use them rarely enough I don't
remember for sure which the last version is. But I have a few files
that would be a real pain to convert to something else, especially since
I don't use them often, but at least for most I know it's possible.

In my case, Managing Your Money. I would convert to Quicken, except I've
never been able to find a way to convert the data. Re-entering all my
portfolio data by hand would be impractical -- because of reinvested
dividends, I have hundreds of mutual fund purchases.

don't bother with quicken. they've shown themselves to be incompetent.

i know someone in a similar situation, who has their data in quicken
and wants to find something else because it's buggy.

unfortunately, everything else sucks more. one product (don't remember
which) claims to import quicken but he gets different values each time
he imports. that's *not* good.

I only mentioned quicken because it's the obvious contender. I'd
probably use just about any modern money management application if it
could import the MYM data.

Every one I've ever tried--including Quicken 2003--was MORE work and
slower than pencil and paper.

How many securities do you have in your portfolio, and how many purchase
lots? I have about 350 positions spread across 36 securities (mostly
mutual funds, many of which have dividend reinvestment). The
application is a godsend when I need to see where my unrealized gains
and losses are distributed so I can decide which positions to sell, and
when filling in Schedule D. I'd hate to try to do this by hand.

I've been using this application for over 20 years, I think.

NONE. As I was sending, I though 'I should have added that my business
is quite simple.'

Launching one of these programs, entering a few checks, and shutting it
down takes as long as balancing the checkbook the old fashioned way.

If all I were doing was balancing my checkbook, it wouldn't be an issue.
I'm keeping track of a $2M portfolio.

I suppose I can afford to pay someone to transcribe it for me into a
spreadsheet. But as long MYM still runs under Sheepshaver, I don't need
to.

I'm with you Barry. We've been using it for 20 years too. I almost
panicked when it looked like they wouldn't come out with an Intel
version, but they did! Our accountant doesn't have good things to say
about Quicken, but then he hasn't been using it for 20 years.

I'm not using Quicken, I'm using Managing Your Money. They stopped

Gotcha -- didn't read closely. You understand well those of us who

It's weird that your accountant doesn't like Quicken when many can make
a tidy sum setting up Quickbooks for businesses. But there's nothing
like Quicken for a portfolio unless you go a professional-class app,
most likely running on Windows.

He's a very professional tax accountant (both personal and corporate)
and, yes, he uses very professional apps on Windows. We've ourselves
found some areas where Quicken does have problems and so can understand
why he doesn't like it. But this isn't the forum for that.

I haven't found anything to come close to Quicken for dealing with a
portfolio beyond 100 securities. Some of my mutual funds do quarterly
adjustments buying in and out of funds and short of getting something
that manages a big portfolio, Quicken is it.
