#51292 — Strange transfer bhehavior

Not too long ago I discovered a strange behavior when I transfer music
files from my internal editing harddisk (1,5tb/64mb cache Barracuda
Constellation) onto my archive disk - an external FW800 Mercury AL PRO
RAID with a 4gb buffer (2x2tb/64mb cache WD Caviar Vario), and I at the
same time am playing music files (formats doesn't matter here) located
on the external disk using VLC (latest ver.).

When I for example move a folder containing 20-25 MP3 or M4A files
everything is as it should be. But when I move a folder with same amount
of files in FLAC, AIFF or WAV format, then VLC stops regularely while
the transfer is in progress.

To me it seems as if the buffer runs full so there isn't 'room' enough
for the playback with VLC (VLC loacted on the startup disk). - I have
tried to exchange the FW cable with another one - same result. My
standard cable is a high-capacity silver+OFC cable.

- I've tried to do the same with other FW800 AND USB disks - with the
same results... And it doesn't matter either using the internal FW ports
or the additonal PCIe FW and USB cards.

Computer:
- MacPro Xeon 4x2,66ghz, 14gb RAM
System:
- Mac OS X 10.5.8, 10.6.8, 10.7.5, WinXP Pro SP3
Harddisks:
- 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm/64mb cache +
- 2x Seagate Constellation 7200rpm/64mb cache

Anyone have any explanation to this weird behavior?

Cheers, Erik Richard
