Over the years, someone occasionally posts that having a lot of icons on
your desktop slows down the machine.

I always counter that I have trouble squeezing in one more and yet my
machine runs fine.

Well, some of you will be happy to know that Apple seems to have sided
with you. Now that I have 10.9, my regular account takes ages to be
ready to go. But my admin account (ten icons) comes up instantly.

it did when systems were a g3 and had 128 meg of memory.

each icon is really a little window with its own backing store, and it
didn't take that many of them to use up most of available memory.

modern macs with 4-16 gigs of memory and multicore processors that are
worlds faster along with faster hard drives and certainly ssd, it no
longer makes any significant difference. the effect is probably not
even measurable anymore unless you had thousands and thousands of
icons.

I doubt it is down to too many icons.

Perhaps the nature of them in some way. Try temporarily taking half
off to a temporary folder elsewhere. If the desktop then works as
before (fast enough), put back half of the ones that you took off...
etc. If the desktop is still slow after taking half off, put them back
and take the other half off.

You will understand the elimination principle involved. Francis Bacon
outlined a few, quite some time ago. J.s. Mill was more thorough.
People regularly call these principles, The Scientific Method. In
fact, this a big exaggeration (there is no one set "method"). But I
mention this in passing.

Yes, I understand it, but I'm too lazy to do it. It won't change the
new behavior.
