#50669 — My 2¢ on Mavericks

(long time since I've been on this N.G.)

On a relatively new MacBook Pro Retina, Mountain Lion.

Took 10 hours to download, but then I have only a 1.5M DSL line.
30 minutes to install, followed by a 5 minute continuation.
Took another half day or so to download the *free* updates of iPhoto,
Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.

So far what I think are only a few minor glitches.

Don't like the change in Dock background color, but can live with it.
I'll probably grab one of the Dock enhancement apps and fiddle with it.

The Time Machine icon in the menu bar now indicates a back-up is in
progress with a barely visible change in the clock-face icon, rather than
the rotating clock border. OK, but it took awhile to notice.

When Pages first came up the open file dialogue opened into iCloud and I
didn't realize that at first and I thought it was broken -- couldn't
find my files! (then I saw the "My Mac" selection and that fixed it.)

I have a handful of different accounts for self-protection and it's
annoying that when I first logged into each of them it went through the
drill of asking for my AppleID. But of course it's only a one-time (for
each account) annoyance.

Some of the accounts came up with the previous desktop background color;
others came up with some weird pattern.

Had a short cut to Wireless Diag on the dock that turned into the ?. I
imagine they moved or renamed it. Too lazy to find it again and don't
really need to since it's readily accessible from the wifi menu item.

I have one account that I want encrypted but not the whole disk, so I
created it with its home directory on an encrypted disk image. As I
recall it was a little tricky to set up. It doesn't work on Mavericks
-- I keep getting a request that it needs to update the Library. I'm
guessing it's a permissions/ownership/acl problem and I haven't had time
to track it down. (The image is fine so I'm not worried about losing
the data in the account.)

An applescript I use to launch ShapeShifter doesn't work, but SS itself
works fine if I launch it manually. No time yet to track the bug down.

Thunderbird now puts up a notification when new mail arrives (Nice!) --
I don't know if that ability was there before but I hadn't enabled it or
if something happened with Mavericks. (TBird itself wasn't updated.)

I haven't yet put everything I use through all its paces, but I think
I've tried all my main apps and features and have a sense that most
everything works faster (iPhoto especially) but since I don't do
anything terribly taxing, that doesn't really make sense!

Generally quite a pleasant experience.

The mounted disk in finder sidebar still spins as before.

I tried to buy a 99-cent app today and got "since this is your first
purchase on this device ..." (NO IT ISN'T) "... you must answer your
security questions" (I NEVER RECORDED ANY ANSWERS)

Then the Apple support guy suggests I write down my answers.
They assume you don't know how to make a good password, so they put a
bunch of silly rules to prevent you from creating one you can remember.
Warn you not to write it down because that's insecure.
But since you won't be able to remember it, they have you select and
answer "security questions" And since these are even harder to
remember, they tell you to write them down!

I had two (of 6) that dissappeared. I kept trying to drag them back,
but they wouldn't take. Finally I held down the apple key while
dragging it and they loaded again.
